"Akira Complex is undoubtedly a one-man army, pushing out piece after piece with no sign of slowing down any time soon. Brandon’s work extends past just his own productions however, he is the man behind the scenes at Attack the Music — a US based label aiming to promote the Japanese scene internationally — working all the mastering for some really big name artists. His self-created sample library pretty well extends past the available limit on storage capacity, and he alone has brought himself from a small-town Carolina boy, onto the international circuit performing alongside acclaimed Japanese producers such as Kors K and Camellia. Just a few months ago, Akira Complex even had the honor of producing for Studio Triggers’ Animated Short Sex, Violence and Machspeed." - Akiba Weekly
Hey, our names are Michael Vitale, Lizzy Zhang, Scott Loper and Lachlan Johnston - we like to consider ourselves close friends of Brandon Thompson.
I think it’d be fair to say that we all met Brandon in our own uniquely diverse ways, but the common attribute we all share is the URL set to our name.
Scott: I came across Akira Complex one day while I was looking for music, and I thought he had a really unique sound. I purchased the one song he had up on Bandcamp and followed him on Soundcloud. He sent me a note a day later thanking me for buying his music and introduced himself, followed by adding me on Facebook. I think he must have been pretty excited to have someone purchase his music at first.
Michael: Well, I added Brandon after seeing he was mutuals with a Japanese artist known as M-Project. Not long after that however, there was this whole thing about how his cat, Dizzy, had been hit by a car and needed surgery. I figured to myself “Sure I have some spare $$$" so I hit him up and told him I didn't have much but I'd like to help. Since then we've just been very good URL buds (soon to be IRL).
Lizzy: I added Brandon on Facebook after stumbling upon his music on Soundcloud, and messaged him telling him how good his song Transmission was. I sent him a few dog pics and we ended up bonding over synthesizer talk.
Lachlan: It’s been interesting, I met Brandon through my usual absurd comments online, leading to him essentially shooting me a message. We ended up bonding through our conversations, and would go on to support each other throughout all of our ventures. We finally met in Los Angeles July of 2015 for Anime Expo, me being Australian, it was definitely something exciting. What I found the most interesting however, was that regardless of that URL missing from our names, we were still just two guys who loved to goof around. And nothing makes me happier than that knowledge.
You know, a lot of what we grew up with as kids was fear-mongering for the net-generation. You know the typical ‘Anyone online is going to lead you astray’ kinda talk you would get? I think that in this day and age, the internet is so much more of a medium than just general interactions, sharing pictures, clicking like, etc. Our generation have taken it to a whole new level, redefining what it means to hold a friendship dear.
So, on a personal level, we want you to know the Brandon behind the Akira Complex persona:
Brandon lives in North Carolina with his mom, dad, and 6-year old brother, Noah. Oh, and like twenty-seven cats. He puts every spare moment he has into his music and helps support his family with their health needs.
Michael: Brandon is literally one of the nicest dudes I have ever met - he radiates kindness.
Lizzy: He's super kind and understanding and one of the funniest people I know - his humor is so quirky! He's a huge inspiration. He's constantly motivating all of his producer friends and offering advice of all sorts.
Scott: I was walking down the street with Brandon one day, and he saw a homeless guy passed out on the sidewalk. He pulled five dollars out of his wallet and tried to wake the guy to see if he was alright. When the guy didn’t respond, Brandon pushed the bill into his hands, hoping that this homeless guy would be able to have a decent meal when he came to.
Lachlan: Brandon is probably one of the most human people I know. His concern for others is shown in every segment of his life, and it makes me proud af to call him my friend.
To cut to the chase, while Brandon was traveling abroad recently, his laptop was stolen. Music is his passion and his lifeline – he has a desktop computer that he produces on, but he has had times where his computer has had several weeks of downtime in the last year. He needs another workstation, and having a mobile workstation allows him to work while he travels. He doesn’t currently have enough money to replace his laptop, which is why we are asking for donations toward a goal of $2000 within 7 days to buy him a laptop that will be everything that he needs to produce music, no matter the conditions or place. We want to do this for him as a surprise, and we need your help to make this dream a reality. Brandon does a lot selflessly for his family and other people, and we want to take the opportunity to turn around this unpleasant situation. We appreciate your consideration in giving towards this goal. Thank you!
Also, we want to load the laptop up with notes and videos of his supporters, so leave something in the notes if you want it to be passed onto him, or contact the campaign organizers to send a video note.
