The final update to Mac's story- 5/14/2021

We are updating this GoFundme because many people are invested in Mac's condition and may not see our posts on social media, so we are simply using this as a platform to keep everyone informed. We also turned off the ability to submit donations because we will have enough to cover the upcoming surgery.

After a month of visiting the surgical specialist, we still have no end in sight for the opportunity to save Mac's leg with a skin graft procedure. The information from yesterday's visit was that they wanted to wait at least another four weeks to see IF the wound would stop releasing fluid. During the past 4 months, the fluid has never once stopped draining and because it is so severe, we don't believe it ever will. The graft only comes with a partial success rate and there is a chance it will not work at all. Additionally, the doctors believe that he will have constant/chronic pain in his leg for the rest of his life, which would pose the risk of him licking at those "hot spots" and take us right back to where we started.

We made the most difficult decision of our lives and Mac will be having his front leg amuptated next week. We want to be clear that we are NOT making this decision because the fundraising goal came a little short. We had an offer from an anonymous donor to cover a large portion of the surgery, so doing the graft was and still remains financially viable. But between keeping him in pain for at least another month (not including several months of recovery following the graft) combined with the fact that he will live with chronic pain in his leg,  we feel this is truly the best way for him to move on and live out his days as a happy dog.

Since all of this started, he has not been using the leg and is already adapted to walking on the other three.  The recovery time should only take a few short weeks and we know he will be up an running in no time. This will also put an end to the daily doses of pain killers, sedatives and anti-inflammatory drugs, which can't be good for his health when taken over extended periods of time like he has been.  We truly believe that he will live a happy life, even with only three legs.

Regarding costs: we have been using funds raised from the GoFundme to cover medications and visits to the specialist, which are averaging about $500 per week right now. The remaining funds should be enough to cover the amputation and all requirements following the surgery. We will be able to cover the remainder out of pocket so please do not donate any additional funds.

We are deeply grateful for everyone's support and truly have no words to express our appreciation. Mac is incredibly fortunate to have so many people who care about him and we thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts.
