Cynthia and Joshua got married in 2010, in 2011 they had a miscarriage, for the next 3 years they were unable to conceive. They went to a specialist who informed them that they had infertility issues and that Cynthia has PCOS. After a few rounds of infertility treatment they were able to conceive. Cynthia had a wonderful pregnancy; Baby Ninja (appropriately titled since they had no name picked out yet) was just a little mover and groover inside his Mom. Baby Ninja was due to meet his family on 22 July 2015. On 17 July 2015 Cynthia's water broke, but she had no contractions so the doctors told her to come in the next morning if contractions had not started yet.
Joshua and Cynthia arrived at the hospital at 0800 the next morning. The doctors informed her that her water had broken and that they were going to induce labor through the use of Pitocin. By 1530 in the afternoon Cynthia was at 5cm and having horrible back pains from the Pitocin. At 1600 she requested an epidural and by 1700 she got it. At 1715 she was already at 10 cm and ready to push. Little Ninja did not want to come out even after pushing for 3 hours, so they decided to use the vacuum to give him a little motivation. Less than 10 minutes later Baby Ninja was introduced to the world on 18 July 2015 at 2057; he was 20.5 inches long and 7 pounds 10.5 ounces. He was the most beautiful baby that the nurses and doctors had ever seen, and even with his Mom being on the epidural he was extremely bright eyed and bushy tailed! After the parents "Golden Hour" with him the nurses gave him an APGAR score of 8 out of 10 the first minute and a 9 out of 10 five minutes later; he truly was the perfect baby. Around 2 hours after birth the parents were transferred rooms and the doctors had found out that Cynthia had hemorrhaged during labor. While Daddy was holding their new son the nurse took Mom to the bathroom to get some of the blood out. While in there Cynthia had a blood clot the size of a grapefruit drop in the toilet and passed out shortly after. Daddy put their son into the crib and yelled for nurses to come and help. Cynthia regained consciousness and had a short seizure shortly after. She dropped two more blood clots about the size of a baseball to softball out throughout the rest of their hospital stay.
The next day and a half at the hospital was filled with love and support for the family and especially the new baby. Still not having a name the parents had a list of names still undecided upon so Dad took it upon himself to start asking little baby what his name was and when Daddy said Jonah their son gave him a wink and a little smirk but Mom did not see it. Soon after, Dad asked him again if Jonah was his name (with Mommy watching) and he gave a little laugh with a smile that grinned from ear to ear, so Mommy decided that that was his name.
Monday the parents were able to take him home from the hospital and it was the most amazing time of their life. They introduced their new bundle of joy to their fur babies Doc and Sadie (two miniature schnauzers). The pups had been waiting for this bundle of joy probably longer than the parents had and they were so sweet with him. Doc would bring poor Jonah a toy any time he got even a little fussy and Sadie could get him to stop crying by simply walking over to him and touching him with her fur. Mom and Dad also introduced him to the outside world, his new room, and to a parents' unending love for their child. The next morning was the start of everything.
The parents awoke to a weird breathing pattern that Jonah was having and knew that this was not right so they quickly set off to the Pediatric Clinic at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Mom was getting increasingly concerned while riding with Jonah in the back because at one point Jonah's entire face was beat red and did not seem like he was breathing, a few moments later he began again so the parents contributed it to him trying to poop (which he had been having painful bowel movements anyways). While in the waiting room the staff worked quickly to get Jonah an appointment and 15 minutes later he was taken to the back. The parents informed the doctors of everything and about how Jonah had starting having some form of whole body convulsion pretty periodically since arriving at the hospital. The nurses left the room and no sooner than that Jonah looks at his Dad with his mouth wide open and stopped breathing. The parents screamed for help as Dad managed to get Jonah breathing again. The doctors instantly take Jonah to triage and within five minutes Pediatric Intensive Care Unit personnel came down to take Jonah into their custody.
Once in the custody of the PICU staff Jonah is quickly monitored and tested to determine the cause; beginning from blood bacteria to CT scans. The first CT scan revealed that there is some damage to the brain but it will take an MRI to fully determine the actual extent. The PICU team expeditiously hurried to get an MRI performed and the results show that baby Jonah has severe brain damage to both sides of his brain and that he will have lifelong damage from this. The doctors inform the parents that he will be in critically serious condition for the next few days and even possibly weeks or longer. The next few days are just a roller coaster of emotions for his family and friends. His Dad updates Facebook twice daily asking for support and prayers for his son with unwavering dedication and his Mother rarely leaves his side as she has a renewed strength to be by Jonah's side and try to feed him all the positive energy that she can muster. Over the next few days the doctors find out that the event that caused everything to occur is still unknown but what they do know it that baby Jonah has MRSA, his blood became extremely acidic which lead to a lack of oxygen being carried by the blood to every organ in his body; which directly led to less oxygen getting to his brain (causing the damage, the extent of which is still unknown), his intestines had a spot of what worried the doctors but has since corrected itself or so it seems, Jonah has corrected the blood acidity on his own, he is still hooked up to a breathing regulator, and has been sedated since he arrived in PICU.
In spite of all that Jonah is still fighting for his life with God's help and the support of countless family and friends. Up until Friday baby Jonah was still wiggling his toes, holding people's hands, and had good pupil dilation. His brain has finally started to swell due to the damage caused from the lack of oxygen. This in turn has caused lack of some of the smaller motor function issues and they also pulled him off of the sedation with no response yet. Currently he has a blown left pupil, his right pupil is not responsive, he has no toe movement, his heart and kidney stats are below what they should be. But as with all stories we love the silver linings; his vitals are holding steady, his blood pressure is maintaining steady, his Dad can feel him holding his hand as he reads him stories, he has regulated the acidity of his blood, he is having bowel movements, prayer chains are going around the world, and his Mom and Dad are well aware that he is a precious gift from God that has impacted more people than any of us will ever know.
