I am in the process of saving my family home. I have to have the house fixed and up to code within 6 months of the closing date, which was Feb 9, or I will lose it to the city. For those that do not know, here is a little history on the house. This home was built in 1917. My great grandfather and great grandfather purchased the house together. My grandfather was raised in this home and so was my dad, his siblings, and me and my siblings. We also have countless memories of family functions and fun. When my great grandmother died in the 1997 my dad took ownership of the house (my great grandfather and grandfather transitioned before my great grandmother). My dad did a lot of remodeling to the home, building a patio, adding patio doors, etc, etc, etc (lol). On September 1, 2003, when I was 13 years old my dad died tragically. After the years, my family home was lost too taxes and has just been sitting. A few years ago I decided to go searching on how to get my home back. I called the city to find out they had given ownership over to Detroit Land Banking Authority. While speaking with Detroit Land Banking Authority they let me know they had to go out and assess the house to see how they were going to sale it and it could take up to four weeks. Weeks went by, months went by, eventually a year, then more months. I came to a point where I had to choose to quit my job due to medical reasons and move out of my apartment because I had to leave my job. Before I made my decision I prayed and asked to be led in the right direction and to show me he has me covered. I was so worried about having to live with someone and EXACTLY one week after leaving my job I get a call from Detroit Land Banking Authority telling me they would be putting the house up for sale that coming Monday. Problem is I didn't have any money. When I got home that day I had a letter in the mail about some money I didn't even know I was allowed to touch and it was the almost the exact amount I needed for the house. A few days later I purchased the house and on February 9, 2017, I closed on the house. Detroit Land Banking Authority's website is called "building up Detroit" and that's exactly what they mean. If you purchase a house from them and you don't demolish it or fix it up to code and have it occupied within 6 months of closing then they are going to take it. I also have to send updates of progress every 30 days. Those 30 days go by fast and scrambling up money to get things done is not so easy. I spoke with Detroit Housing Commission who stated they didn't have any grants available at the time but the grants they usually offer require you to own the home for 6 months to qualify. Unfortunately 6 months is my deadline. I made it this far and now I need some help. I'm calling all family, friends and anyone willing. Anything you could do would be greatly appreciated, even if it's just leading me in the direction of other help. Below are a few of the major things needed to bring the house up to code.-Entire roof needs to be redone-Walls & ceilings need to be demolished due to damage caused by leaking roof-some floor boards need to be replaced due to leaking roof-pipes were stolen-water heater was stolen THANK YOU EVERYONE!
