Facebook Community! As many of you know, I am involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters, and I mentor an 11 year old boy named Reese from Ypsilanti. Recently, Reese and his family have gone through a major hardship, leaving them in a very bad spot.
Their Story
The family recently had a bat in the home, that they were unable to get rid of for multiple days. A couple of days after the bat was taken care of, the children in the home started complaining of bug bites all over their bodies, and when Reese's mom noticed random bite marks on the kids, she began to investigate further only to find out that they had an issue with bat bugs in the home. They had to throw out what little they had (bedding, clothes, towels, living room furniture and the actual mattresses themselves) to try and get rid of the problem. While this was going on, they had an issue with flooding in the basement of their home. The basement flooded two seperate times, with the second containing raw sewage. They stored all of their extra belongings, in the basement, so they truly have lost everything. Things got so bad, that the mother reached out to the landlord for assistance, and when he denied to help, she asked to break her lease. He denied her request. She had to call Child Protective Services, to report herself, so they would come investigate the home, and deem it unlivable, thus allowing her to break the lease. CPS did so, and they were able to get out of the house. Through the help of CPS and other agencies, they were able to get into a new house. As of right now they only have two twin mattresses (donated through an agency) to sleep 6 children (one infant) and the mother. This means many sleepless nights for the mother, as she sits up watching over her children through the night. They were already living in extreme poverty, and now they are up against their toughest challenge yet.
How YOU Can Help!
As of right now, I am working on getting them furniture but have been unsuccessful to date. All money raised, will be put towards getting them the essentials they need to live. This would be: bedding, clothes, towels, cleaning supplies, food, furniture, and anything else they may need. It has been incredible to see the resilency of this family, as they face serious challenges, time, and time again. Anything you can contribute will help. It doesnt have to be monetary. If you have any furniture you can donate the main things needed are living room furniture, 2 headboards and a kitchen table. Initially I wanted to set the goal at $500 but with Christmas right around the corner, I am raising the bar to $1,000 with the hope that we can try and give them an opportunity to have a happy and safe Christmas! Thank you all for being a part of this mission!
Much Love,
