Christmas is a time for family and friends, for sharing and gifting love, for expressing your joy and happiness with your community.
What it shouldn't be about is sterile hospital lights, insurance paperwork, fear and dread about how you'll handle medical bills, or anxiety about how you'll recover and be able to perform your job...
That is unfortunately the situation that our beloved instructor Josh has found himself in as we entered into this Christmas week as he felt himself lurch forward in his car while driving on 104 on Sunday to take care of instructor Jonathan's cats while he was out of town.
He was rear ended by another vehicle, both of which got totaled from the damage.
"I'm fine," he told me on the phone on Sunday, "but I'll go get checked out at urgent care just in case."
He was then carted off to Strong for images and had to stay the night on watch. He's now in a neck brace for at least a couple weeks while he waits to get seen by a surgeon who will make the call as to whether or not the damage to Josh's neck warrants surgery.
This is an unbelievably tragic incident and it's one that I can't imagine happening to a nicer and non-deserving person. Josh has been a staple of our community for nearly a decade. He's had quite the tumultuous year this year, already having to navigate the death of his mother earlier this year, 3 different moves in preparation to become a father, another accident which totaled his vehicle just a few months ago, and a break up that put a huge strain on his desire to be as great of a father as he wants to be. This "icing on the cake" is honestly just too raw and bitter to be left alone.
Life is full of unfairness and inequities, but one of the most amazing evolutions of us humans is using our brain power to construct ways that address those flaws of existence.
I know that life and finances are tough for most of us, but it you can find room for even just a couple dollars to help out someone who has given their whole heart to this movement community of ours, I cannot tell you how much it would mean to Josh in helping him navigate this predicament of his.
I'm creating this GoFundMe while in a room surrounded by my family and my in-laws. I'm hearing my son giggle as he's chased by my father-in-law. We have heat and food being made. I'm surrounded by love.
And Josh is alone.
While that may stay true physically, I hope that we can show him that no matter where he is or what life throws his way, he'll never be truly alone because he has us.
