Hello friends, neighbors, and kind strangers,
My name is Cassi. I’m 66 years old, a dual U.S./Canadian citizen, and recently relocated to Canada to ensure a more secure future in uncertain political times.
At the end of December 2024, a long-term contract job I held ended. On February 1st, I moved to Canada, concerned about the future of Social Security under the Trump administration and knowing that I’d be eligible for Canadian benefits as a citizen by birth.
The move was expensive and drained what savings I had. I thoroughly researched car importation laws and believed I would be able to keep my U.S. car in Canada for up to six months. Unfortunately, Canadian customs laws are far more complicated than they first appear. Due to a misinterpretation of the rules, I was informed that I’d have to import my vehicle immediately.
The cost of doing so — because of Trump-era tariffs and import fees — came to over $5,000. Money I simply don’t have.
Unable to pay that amount, I was forced to send my car back to the U.S., where it now sits in storage. I’m currently living in Canada, surviving on U.S. Social Security and unemployment, while actively looking for new work. But without a car, it’s incredibly difficult to attend interviews, run errands, or take on potential job opportunities.
I have no relatives who can help. That’s why I’m turning to you — to my community, near and far — to ask for your support.
If I can raise $5,000, I’ll be able to:
Retrieve my car from storage in the U.S.
Properly import it into Canada
Regain the independence I need to get back on my feet
