My best friend, Brian, and father of my son, was recently diagnosed with severe Osteomyelitis of the spine - a life-threatening condition caused by a staph infection that began from a superficial cut.

By the time it was discovered, the infection had already caused significant damage. For nearly three months, it was misdiagnosed, allowing it to spread. When Brian finally received an MRI, the doctors told him to go immediately to the ER. The infection had eaten away at multiple areas of his spine, and one wrong move could have left him paralyzed.

Brian underwent emergency spinal surgery and spent 11 days in the hospital with a team of specialists working around the clock to determine what had caused this and how to treat it.

Today, he’s home, but he’s facing a long and difficult road to recovery.

He must wear a brace at all times (except when sleeping or showering) to support his spine, which is now held together with screws and rods. He’s on IV antibiotics 24/7 for 12 weeks through a PICC line, after which he will be on oral antibiotics for weeks to months. He has to use a bone stimulator daily and will have to go through physical therapy once his doctors deem it safe to remove his brace, which won't be for some time. His activity is extremely limited, and he continues to attend frequent doctor appointments.

Brian is an electrical contractor who has been working hard to build up his new company, but he hasn’t been able to work at full capacity for months. With five children still at home, this has created an overwhelming financial burden.

His oldest son has stepped up in an incredible way, working tirelessly to help keep the business running in Brian's absence. But it's been a huge undertaking for the whole family, and they can't do it alone.

He’s doing everything he can to stay afloat, but it truly takes a village in times like this.
