Adopt-a-Ward at Majuro Hospital
Iakwe from the Marshall Islands!
As you may or may not have heard, the WorldTeach Marshall Islands program has closed its doors in the RMI for the time being. This means for the first time since 2002 there is no new cohort of volunteers sleeping on floors during orientation, no shiny new faces trying to figure out Majuro taxis (and bucket flushing), and most unfortunately, no new volunteers meeting their communities and students.
The generous community of the Marshall Islands welcomed us all into their country, their schools, and their homes with the true iakwe spirit, and a few of us RiBelle's that are still living the island dream wanted to find a way for all of us to give back. We wanted to say "Kommooltata Majol" for sharing their sunsets and their stories for the past for 17 years.
And we found the perfect way to do that--adoping a room at the Majuro Hospital!
Unfortunately, many of you have had to visit the Majuro hospital - Field Directors a few too many times - and we all know the challenges these facilities face. The hospital lacks resources to update and maintain hospital rooms with critical components, like bathrooms.
We aim to raise $10,000 to renovate and maintain a 2-bed ICU room. The funds go towards:
-materials and labor to repair room damages
-materials and labor to install new plumbing and fixtures in the bathroom
-materials and labor repaint the room
-local hire for weekly cleaning services
-basic room supplies, such as soap and toilet paper
Time in the ICU is among the hardest in someone's life, and we hope to show those who stay there that the WorldTeach Alumni care to make their stay clean and comfortable. There will be a plaque put up to recognize WorldTeach Volunteers from 2002 - 2017.
Please donate whatever you can and share widely with your friends and families. There have been hundreds of volunteers over the years, so it should take us no time to reach our goal of $10,000!
This task will be managed by a volunteer project team here in Majuro, comprised of WorldTeach alumni still living and working here:
Angela Saunders: Head of Office for the International Organization for Migration and President of Jambo Arts NGO. She first came to the RMI14 years ago as a volunteer in Maloelap and has lived here 9 years.
Madeline Cochran: Deputy Director for Marshall Islands Conservation Society. She first came to the RMI in 2017 as a volunteer in Jaluit and has lived here since.
The project team will be sending regular progress reports to donors as well as justification of spending.
