On January 3rd, Tonya’s life changed forever when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer.
What followed was a grueling three months away from home, undergoing 25 rounds of radiation, 5 rounds of cisplatin chemotherapy, and 4 internal brachytherapy treatments. All of this took place five hours from home in St. John’s, where Tonya and her husband stayed from January to March—far from their children, who remained in the care of their grandparents.
It was an incredibly difficult time, but Tonya faced it all with strength and determination. The family clung to hope, and scans in the spring showed promising results: the cancer in her lymph nodes had responded well to treatment.
But that hope was shaken when a recent PET scan revealed the original tumor has not only remained—but is now growing. Doctors have confirmed it will require surgery and another round of treatment: six more rounds of a much stronger chemotherapy. Whether surgery or chemo will come first is still uncertain.
On top of that, Tonya has now been diagnosed with hydronephrosis, a painful condition affecting her kidneys. She is scheduled for another surgery on August 12th to place stents in both kidneys.
Tonya, her husband, and their children have already been through so much—physically, emotionally, and financially. With months of travel, accommodations, and time off work already behind them, and another long road ahead, they need our help.
This fundraiser is to help ease the burden on this incredible mom and her family as they continue this fight. Every donation—no matter how small—makes a difference and brings them one step closer to healing together, at home.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your love, prayers, and support for Tonya.
