This fund was created in early March as a response to COVID-19 in the DTES and inspired by activism and support for Oppenheimer Park tent city. My name is Rianne and I work to support Erica Grant, Chrissy Brett and Fiona York in their community care and mutual aid initiatives.
We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the support received so far and what we have been able to help accomplish with your help.
After 3 months and almost $20k raised, Erica Grant and two teams of family and community members have distributed over 20,000 meals and hygiene kits in the Downtown Eastside.
Erica and her community’s tireless work has made a significant difference for the safety, well-being and quality of life in her community that has been deeply affected by Covid-19 closures of resources and safer spaces.
The funds from this campaign also helped provide and distribute over 8,000 nourishing meals and hygiene supplies in Oppenheimer Park. More recently, it supported fire keepers, infrastructure and residents at CRAB Park Tent City (Namegan’s Nation 2.0).
The need for financial support continues. Resources like meals and supplies, supportive spaces and safe shelter options are still at an extreme lack in the DTES.
Funds received from this point forward will go towards support for:
-Erica and DTES care teams as they continue to provide meals, snacks, hydration and PPE for DTES unhoused community. Check out their facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/TeamDTES/
-Firekeepers, infrastructure and other core needs at the new tent city led by Chrissy Brett, Camp Kennedy Trudeau
-Firewood for the sacred fire sustained 24-7 by Veronica Butler and other firekeepers. Donated firewood also welcome! If you have firewood to donate or know of a good source of free firewood, please email [email redacted]
