Help me march my age-out with the Bluecoats!
Hi all, my name is Matthew Jourdan and I'm currently a Music Education major at Texas Tech University. I've been marching baritone with the Bluecoats for two years (2022 and 2023).
My interest in the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps began in 2017 after stumbling across a headcam video (Ben Gunnarson's) from the 2016 Bluecoats program "Downside Up". Going into high school marching band, my standards for what I wanted to do with the marching arts skyrocketed, and I believed that high school was going to be exactly like what was shown on the headcam. I was mistaken in that belief, but from that moment on, I knew that the Bluecoats were my favorite Drum Corps.
I first witnessed the Bluecoats perform live in 2018, the summer immediately after my Freshman year of high school. Watching that performance live was absolutely life changing. Everything from start to finish was absolutely perfect, and I loved every single second of it. What made that show special to me was that my prior high school drum major was also marching that show, so I had a more personal connection with it. Since then, the 2018 program "Session 44" has held a special place in my heart as I look back at it knowing that that show solidified the idea that I wanted to be at the Bluecoats.
And here we are now! Since 2022 I've learned so much about what it means to be a Bluecoat. To be a Bluecoat is to love, learn, adapt, perform, and create to the highest level possible.
The staff here is absolutely incredible, and contributes to my learning as an educator as they are some of the best within their own respective fields. Every summer that I've come back, I know that I've gained so much knowledge from the people around me, as well as a 165-person family.
In addition to everything that I have learned, what I take with me from every summer are some incredible memories. I'm so incredibly lucky to have marched at a place like the Bluecoats. At the Bluecoats, I feel at home. I feel like I can be myself every single day and everyone there will accept me for who I am. In my last year with this organization, I want more than anything to max out everything I do in service of this Drum Corps.
With your donation, not only will I be furthering my knowledge in Music Education, but I will be learning valuable life skills and creating memories that I will hold in my heart for a lifetime.
