Pictured above is Sarah Barnett, 38 year old RN; married to Chase for 10 years (together for 16); Mother to four "Littles" - Gabe 9, Benny 8, Eli 6 and Grace 4.
At the end of February, Sarah discovered a small, hard mass on her left breast. A mammogram and ultrasound led to a biopsy of the mass and a suspicious lymph node. Her pathology results informed her that she had Invasive Ducal Carcinoma, Grade 1, ER and PR both + and HER2 -. The lymph node biopsied was negative. Because her maternal grandmother had been diagnosed with a similar breast cancer at the age of 71, they had also done genetic testing. This came back negative, for which we have all been grateful.
On April 3rd, Sarah underwent a partial mastectomy (a lumpectomy) and sentinel lymph node dissection. On the 17th the breast surgeon called with the results. The 1.5 cm mass was removed along with 2 lymph nodes, one of which was positive. This now changes her diagnosis to Stage 2, Grade 1 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. Her oncotype result is 21, which is intermediate. The chance for distant reccurance is 18%. (For those of you with the understanding of these numbers)
On April 21st, they spoke with the oncologist. Treatment will be aggressive hormone therapy and chemotherapy. She will have four rounds of chemotherapy of Docetaxel and Cyclophasamide (Aka TC therapy) one day a week, three weeks off. This will be followed by radiation of the breast for four to six weeks and then either removal of her ovaries or injections of Lupron. As well as oral Arimidex for ten years.
Chemotherapy starts on April 29th and she will be off work for FOUR MONTHS, at least. Chase has been a stay at home dad for two and a half years, as daycare for four children is incredibly expensive. Sarah has worked two jobs to support their family. When she received her diagnosis she left her part-time job. She works full-time as an RN at St.Mary's in Saginaw. She won't be able to work while receiving treatment as her immune system will be compromised and COVID-19 is a dangerous threat, especially to healthcare workers.
We ask that you please keep Sarah, Chase and their family in your prayers, thoughts and if you can help them monetarily, they'd be incredibly appreciative.
