Help is needed for this family! They have been searching for a home to rent with no luck! With no luck due to the housing crisis in the Tri-Cities area. They are on wait lists for public housing and etc. The wait lists are long and even with all the medical issues and the situation they cannot be moved up any of the lists. I feel strongly this is their LAST and ONLY hope right now! They do NOT have a lot of time left and the shelters are full many of them will not take Ms. Hamm due to her being in a wheelchair. Their are not many homeless shelters in the area.
This is the Hamm family. A family of 3 Angela is the mother of Kayla and grandmother and legal guardian of Levi (age 13) The place where they lived for over 10 years was sold to land developers for future condos and high-income homes. they and 7 other families were told they had 30 days to vacate their homes due to the owner selling the property to a developer (only 2 of the 8 families have found housing so far) The Hamm family along with several friends and family and organizations have been searching for a home for them since then almost on a daily basis. Ms. Hamm was featured on WCYB news as WCYB also tried to help them as well. Other families since have also been told to vacate due to this large land purchase deal so they are competing with more than the 6 remaining families Ms Hamm was told by the storage company they use that people have called them asking if they can rent storage units and live there. This is how bad housing is needed in this area. Just an example.
Angela has end-stage Ms and is in a wheelchair and on oxygen and has several other very serious health issues one of which she found out about just days before being given the order to vacate by a local realtor. Kayla is an amputee (both feet club feet right leg below the knee has a prosthetic) and has serious issues with her left foot and will be needing surgery on her stump where pressure on the bone has made it difficult for her to walk at times. Levi is healthy but has a broken arm from a fall at a friend's home in April that may need surgery and possibly have some damage that they will know more on this as the weeks progress.
They pass background checks but due to the many medical bills are unable to pass the credit scores needed for some places for rent. Several places have steps and due to fire codes cannot allow Ms.Hamm to live in them. The local shelters are full with wait lists for them and some cannot take Ms. Hamm due to wheelchair access. Some are day-by-day shelters where you can only stay until a certain time of the morning some will require Levi to stay separate from the family and have to stay in the men's part on the day-by-day ones.
They will need money or donations or help with the following deposit on power which is a different power service than they had they will need the deposit before power will be turned on. They will need a refrigerator They will need people to help them move their belongings from Gray or money for a uHaul They will also need one full-size bed frame and box spring, one twin bed and frame If we cannot find volunteers to help or donate items needed the extra amount is what I feel they will need to cover purchases and paying for people to help them move.
If we can raise enough money for them to buy a mobile home there are several under the 10,000 price range on sale in the area. Our goal is of course over what posted but this is a great start as much more will be needed to move
This is s really sweet family I have been Ms. Hamm's care coordinator for a while and this is just heartbreaking to I am sure many who know them personally.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email Angela for more information [email redacted] or call Kayla and Angela direct at [phone redacted] Any donations or volunteers will be greatly needed and appreciated
