Hi, my name is Carolyn, and I created this to raise funds to save Lexi's leg. Lexi is the sweetest boxer- pittie mix I've been fortunate to meet. Lexi and her owner have been staying with my husband Geoff and me while they get life plans in place and get ready to step into their future. We are owned by a Great Dane, Canaan. He and Lexi are now napping partners, a (terrible) squirrel-hunting team, and co-owners of all seating spaces on the furniture.
In the first week of November, Lexi cut one of her front toes on something razor-sharp. We have searched our entire house and yard and still have no clue where this happened. We treated her with antibiotic ointment and protected her foot for a few days, which seemed to be healing the cut. Then, she escaped outdoors unattended; she and Canaan successfully took off her wrap and ran through a muck-filled yard. It prompted an immediate call to our vet. We were concerned about infection, as sores appeared on her paw's non-injured side.
Our vet, Dr. Megan Silver, came out to the house, and her first appointment with Lexi was more than 4 hours. We had no idea what Lexi was facing. When we spoke with her after, Dr. Silver carefully walked us through the extent of the infection. There was already extensive tissue death, and Lexi was at high risk for amputation. Dr. Silver explained the treatment would be intensive, likely for at least 4-6 weeks if there are no setbacks. There was no hesitation - we would fight this.
A coworker suggested I try GoFundMe. Who would help us? We don't have a compelling story. We only have one of God's beautiful creatures who locks eyes with us as we are alongside her on a harrowing journey. We will not let her down, but we are both approaching that retirement window and anxious about being in so much debt.
So here it is, a beautiful bundle of pure love and muscle that needs our help. We are giving all we can. Now we are putting it out to the Universe and having faith that some good will come back and take care of Lexi. Please consider contributing or at least sharing Lexi's story.
It has not been easy, and we have had two major setbacks, even with how careful we are about Lexi's treatment protocols. Lexi must be under anesthesia daily for the vet team to do the deep cleaning, cutting away dead tissue, and suturing together what is left to form a functional pad on her foot. We have a wonderful family who tries to take turns at our house to take Lexi out for her sedation and treatment so my husband and I can keep working. With us and Lexi's owner managing meds, keeping dogs separate and calm, supervising outdoor potty trips and finding ways to accommodate her impaired leg, we are finally beginning to see progress.
When I began this GoFundMemy husband and I had paid $5,400 for Lexi's care. With $2000 from GoFundMe, an anonymous payer at Silver Pets, we have split costs between our credit account and the GoFund me. Totals for her care are nearing $8500 We are stretching her care out and buying the meds and supplies needed. Just recently, we've had some new donations and that has given us new hope. Lexi still needs weeks, if not months, of regular treatment. With caring people like you sending in donations, we'll get there!
Peace and All Good,
Carolyn
