There’s no other way to put it but, I’m in desperate need. Let me start off with a little about who I am. I have been a volunteer umpire for Sebastopol Little League, been a part of Goldridge 4H, graduated from Analy last year with a 3.97 GPA, and I’ve also played countless sports. I committed to San Diego State University as a Math major with full intentions of starting my exciting new venture. Unfortunately my family and I received news from FAFSA that our parent loan was in fact denied. So we reapplied for student loans in order to receive the larger loans. I was able to receive $9,000 in loans. I then believed with scholarships and working I would be able to cover the full expenses. But unfortunately it appears otherwise.

Some students see Math as impossible, boring, or even useless. Students struggle with mathematics and give up on it; others believe math is just straightforward and dull; and other students repeatedly ask, “How would we even use this in the real world?”

While there may be some truth behind their opinions; I believe that math is quite the opposite. Math may be difficult but it isn’t impossible. I have had to deal with difficult problems and had no idea on how to approach the problem. After leaving the problem for several minutes, hours or days; I come back to the problem and discover how to solve the issue at hand. Also, problem solving is in no way straightforward or dull. Our teacher taught us to believe we had a bag full of tools that we had to use to somehow fix the dilemma. The tools that we had were the countless theorems and postulates. And using our knowledge, we could use the tools in any creative manner in order to solve the problems. One could witness the limitless creativity in order to solve a problem by having students solve their problems on the board; and witness the variations. “How could we even use this in the real world?” Math is life. I say this only half-jokingly. In all seriousness, math is present all throughout our world. We simply learn the math language in order to better understand our world. Whether it’s the blatantly obvious aspects of life, like cooking recipes and ratios. Or the more complex aspects, like the forces of planetary motion. Math is used throughout our world. Therefore we learn math to understand our world we live in.

I enter this new world called adulthood with a lot of curiosity and optimism. I can’t quite tell you what career I want to enter for the rest of my life. But I can tell you that I am very motivated with a certain goal; I want to improve the lives of others. That may mean I use my passion for math to teach the future generations my love for math, save people money by reevaluating their budgets, or even building homes at the most affordable price in order to allow everyone to be able to live in a comforting home. I simply want to improve lives utilizing my love for math. And hopefully my education at San Diego State will hone my skills and allows me to find the specific way I will improve life.

My parents make daily sacrifices in order to give me and my siblings what they wish they had while growing up. Both of them never had the opportunity to graduate high school and now struggle everyday with that decision. They give everything they can to us while ignoring their own needs. They are trying to give me an education in order to avoid their consequences; but they can only do so much with what they have. I would never let them down.

I went to the financial aid office in order to try to receive some information; all we learned is if we couldn’t cover the fees I would be evicted from the dorms. How can I study and focus on school when I might be simply removed from the school? I can cover the first few months with the loans, a small scholarship and money I made while I worked during the summer. I’ve applied to all the scholarships at the school but I won’t find out for a while. I try to do as much as I can possibly manage; but I need your help. I need to be able to continue studying. I want to continue my pursuit of mathematics; I will return the favor in the future, perhaps start a new scholarship for Analy students. All I know right now though is that I simply want to enhance my skills as a student; but I need your help. Thank you for your time and consideration.
