Eviction Disabled Couple
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Ken Gamble. These are my neighbors, Steve and Debby Day Schwartz pictured here with Steve's donated service dog Thunder who also likes to make sick children happy. They have been living in a family relative's house in Decatur, Alabama since Debby's breast cancer, Steve's heart attack and then near death from Neisseria bacterial meningitis which he developed after a spinal steroid injection in 2010. Now the owner wants to sell the house and have them out in two months!
Steve's meningitis position caused him to need lumbar and cervical surgery in one night which left him with brain damage, bars and screws holding his neck together, removal of discs, and most importantly disability for life. The doctor said he was on death's door. He must take antibiotics for life due to susceptibility to disease and chronic pain medication for which Alabama only allows opioid pills. In the last year he has been put on diabetes medication. Debby had to become his caretaker; while suffering her own cancer, polymyalgia rheumatica, and two recent trauma surgeries for a broken tibia and fibula. Debby now has a nodule on her thyroid that needs a biopsy to determine if she has cancer again which she cannot afford.
All of their financial resources have gone to medical bills and required medications. Their only source of income is Social Security. They are 66 and 67. No family members that can help them. Their only reliable transportation is a 20 year old car. They need assistance in every way - but most importantly having a place to call home and live decently. Alabama does not provide food stamps or assistance in any way. They can't afford prescription drug coverage and all their medications have doubled and they can't always afford them.
Please help Debby, Steve and Thunder get a new life soon.
