Hi, my name is Tamar and I am asking for help from caring humans to help save our cat Benjamin's life.
Benjamin got out of the house 2 months ago and we couldn't get him back in as he is a scaredy cat. His favorite activities are hiding under the bed, eating, cuddling with his cat & dog sibling & receiving pets and love from us on his terms, usually when we are in bed or seated on the couch. We do have a feral cat that we feed outside but apparently Benji did not eat while he was outside even though there was food out. My husband found him last Tuesday night listless and lying his head on the ground in the backyard. He was weak, disoriented and unable to walk. Since it was the Thanksgiving holiday we had to take him to the emergency vet where he had to be hospitalized for 4 nights. He has been home with us for 2 nights now but we are giving him 4 different medications, nutrition supplements and having to feed him through a syringe as he is not yet wanting to eat on his own. Apparently when cats bodies go into starvation mode & they start getting nutrients again they are in danger of something called refeeding syndrome so we have been having to take him in to the the vet nightly to get his blood drawn &electrolytes checked.

Some people might say, "just let him go" but every doctor we have talked to says that cats in this situation usually get better. It is just a long road to recovery. Benji is only 6.5 and we have had him since he was a tiny feral kitten only a few weeks old. We try to give any animal or child in our care the best and longest life possible. Although he is not wanting to eat on his own yet, Benj is purring a lot when we pet him and clean him and showing signs of his normal spunky self, trying to hide under the bed and hiss at us when we go to get him out since we can't care for him under there.

Benjamin came to us shortly after we had moved into our current home due to an electrical fire burning down our previous house. We had one dog and one cat at the time. Our 2nd cat had gone missing while we were displaced so I was left yearning for another kitten. I saw that a friend of a friend had found a tiny feral kitten screaming under her apartment window abandoned by the mama cat and didn't know what to do as they weren't allowed to have cats at their apartment. A few people had responded with interest and I commented that they could consider me as a backup plan. Well.. we became plan A as soon as she saw me interact with the tiny scared kitten hahaha. About a week or 2 after we brought Benjamin home we got a call that our lost cat was found too since he was chipped! The squad has continued growing ever since. We now have 13 rescue animals (cats, dogs, and birds) and we are committed to each and every one of them but sometimes you have to set down your pride and ask for help from your loved ones and your community.

My husband and I are both humble hardworking people and small business owners. He is a plumber and I am a personal trainer. We both try to be good friends, neighbors and to contribute positively to the community. The last 2 years have been especially tough on us mentally, emotionally and financially. We have had some of our own medical bills to deal with which have made us barely able to keep our heads above water but this emergency with Benji has really hit us hard. I understand that things are tough for everybody right now but no matter how tough things get, helping our cat is worth it.
