Help Toby Wolf Get Back On His Feet

Dear friends of Toby Wolf and John Skurchak,

I’m Toby’s friend Marina and I'm raising funds on his behalf.

Toby was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia this April. Since then, he and his husband, John Skurchak, have had their lives pretty much upended. Toby has spent almost ninety days in the hospital for multiple rounds of chemotherapy, which led up to the life-giving gift of a bone marrow stem cell transplant on October 19. (Captured in the photo above, which Toby quipped was his “stem cellfie.”)

Happily, things have been progressing positively as Toby's new stem cells slowly rebuild his immune system and his body recovers from chemotherapy’s side effects. Nonetheless, he still has months and months (realistically, a year and more) of recovery ahead of him.

Toby and John are both self-employed. Toby’s illness has required him to step away almost entirely from his landscape architecture business for months at a time. As Toby's primary caregiver, John has rebuilt his schedule around Toby and therefore his availability and ability to do his own work as a graphic designer has also been severely impacted.

Thankfully, Toby does have health insurance, but it doesn’t cover everything. Neither he nor John have the paid medical leave or subsidized medical benefits that many of us enjoy. Their combined loss of income, their mounting medical bills, and the substantial expenses to ensure that Toby has a safe living environment have taken their collective toll. Toby has finally been persuaded that a GoFundMe page would give those of us who love him a material way of showing our support and helping make him whole.
