This is Chris Comis, he is a father, a husband, a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy for the past 23 years, a member of the LCSO DART and SWAT teams, he is a boater, a Jeeper and a biker. His love of motorcycles had him out for a ride before SWAT class on November 20, 2023 when a deer ran into the path of his motorcycle on CR 575 in Nobleton, Florida.
Chris attempted multiple evasive maneuvers but, in the end, it wasn’t the man or the deer that won the fight, it was the roadway. Chris was life flighted from the scene of the accident in Nobleton, Florida to Bayonet Point Medical Center’s Trauma Unit where he has since been in ICU. Chris suffered a skull fracture, broken ribs, a broken leg, a fractured spine and has dealt with brain swelling and brain bleeds. He was kept in a medically induced sleep for the first 36 hours to allow his body to process the medical intervention and reduce the swelling on his brain.
Chris’ wife Tamara, an OB/GYN nurse has been by his side since the day of the accident. Chris has a daughter who is 11 years old, and Tamara has a special needs son as well as a second son who is at college. While motorcycle insurance and Chris’ medical insurance will absorb the bulk of the medical bills, they are still faced with travel back and forth to the hospital, co-pays, deductibles and meeting their max out of pocket for 2023 AND 2024 as Chris is now facing inpatient care at a neurological rehab facility. This accident has taken a toll on their savings and soon they will be struggling to pay their day-to-day bills for the home since neither are currently not working due to this accident.
Chris has spent most of his life protecting his community and the people in it. He has also assisted in multiple Hurricane Recovery efforts throughout the state as part of his duties with the Lake County Sheriff DART team.
