Update #2
Sobriety Dog Prepares to Become Surgery Dog
When Cova, my four-year service companion and the heart of my sobriety journey, shattered her rear leg last week, I was heartbroken and despondent. It pushed me to the brink and I had to use every tool I’ve learned through the past 8 months of my recovery journey. I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t tested.
Cova was in a great deal of pain, unable to use her back leg, and unable to perform her job as service dog for the Sober Living home where we live, where she rises at 630 every morning to begin serving 15 incredible women in various stages of sobriety and recovery.
I had to seriously consider having her leg amputated. Or even worse.
But what happened next was nothing short of miraculous.
It started with me doing something I’m not comfortable with. Asking you for help.
I’ve cried many times as I watched your contributions to Cova’s GoFundMe. I wasn’t certain anyone would care. But now, 67 people have contributed. Old friends, people whose lives Cova has touched, and even people who dont know her. I’m deeply moved and profoundly humbled.
With your help, we found a very skilled vet outside Stockton. We raised the deposit, and Cova is preparing for surgery this Wednesday.
And I sold my Honda this morning, which will go entirely to her surgery.
I’ll continue to post about Cova’s surgery and recovery, because so many people share in this journey.
And Im hopeful this is my last request to my community. Cova still needs about $1,100 by Wednesday afternoon. If there’s anything you can do to help, everyone Cova cares for would be deeply grateful.
I am humbled.
