It is with heavy hearts that we write these words. On Oct. 18th, the beautiful soul of 17 year old Gunar Shaffer left this world by taking his own life. HIs family and friends are in utter shock as he hid his intention from every single one of us who loved him.

He was a senior in high school and had excelled in advanced placement classes, leading us to believe he was looking forward to college. He loved animals and nature, had a broad range of interests and was meticulous and conscientious in everything he did. He earned his own money working at odd jobs in the community and everyone who hired him raved about his enthusiastic attitude and hard working ethics. He was adamant about the destructiveness of drugs, his estranged father having been caught up and trapped in them when Gunar was young. He was raised, with his younger brother, by their single mom, Heather. From that young age when their father disappeared, Gunar was always jumping in to help his mom in every way he could. From her, he learned to treat everyone with respect and compassion, which he embraced fully. His absence is a void that feels more vast with each passing day.

We remember Gunar as this bright spirit that whenever he entered a room, it lit up with his presence.

Perhaps it was too bright for this world. We will continue to struggle to understand.

It is our wish that this Gofundme can give some financial breathing space for his mother and brother and for us to create a memorial to honor Gunar’s short but impactful life and bring awareness to the increasing rate of suicides amongst teens in America.
