Calvin Otim - Brain tumour surgery
Donation protected
Greetings,
My name is Paula, and I'm currently leading a fundraising effort to secure funds for my dear friend Calvin from Uganda, who urgently requires surgery to remove a brain tumour.
I've known Calvin since 2008, and recently, he experienced sudden blindness in both eyes. While initially diagnosed with glaucoma by doctors in Lira, Northern Uganda, Calvin shared additional concerning symptoms, such as temporary paralysis in both arms and being tongue-tied around the time of losing his eyesight. This raised concerns, leading to a decision to send Calvin for a CT scan.
The scan revealed a benign brain tumour located on his optic nerve. The doctors in Lira recommended that Calvin be taken to Kampala to consult with a neurosurgeon. On November 26th, my family and I drove him to Kampala, accompanied by his younger brother, Deakin, who is now his primary caregiver. Due to Calvin's limited ability to manage alone, our generous friends in Kampala, Peter Alele, kindly offered them accommodation and assistance in navigating the hospital system. Unfortunately, we had to return to Canada on Sunday evening, preventing us from providing in-person care.
Over the past Monday and Tuesday, Calvin underwent extensive testing, including an MRI, consultations with an ophthalmologist and a neurosurgeon. The incurred costs have already reached approximately $1,500 Canadian, with the anticipated surgery cost totaling up to $7,000 Canadian.
We are reaching out for financial support to cover these expenses. Restoring Calvin's sight will significantly improve his quality of life and allow him to continue his role as a caregiver, supporting his five younger siblings. Calvin has been shouldering the responsibility since his mother abandoned the family when the youngest child was just one year old. The financial strain on the family has been immense, and none of the children have been able to attend school due to financial constraints.
Your contribution, no matter how small, would make a meaningful difference. I extend my heartfelt gratitude, and I am confident that Calvin and his family will also be profoundly thankful.
Love,
PAULA OWEN
