Hey community! My name’s Melissa Scheibner, and I’m fundraising to produce an educational memory matching card game that teaches kids about herbalism, called Plant Match!

The deck has 25 matching pairs of medicinal plant cards. There is a painting of the plant on both cards of the pair, with the common name and scientific name on one card, and some of the basic medicinal properties of the plant on the other card. The game is played with all the cards shuffled and laid out facing down, and kids taking turns flipping cards to find the matching pairs. This way, kids will become familiar with what these plants look like so they can learn to identify them, and how they can work with them for health benefits, in a fun way! This deck can be an educational tool for all ages, and the deck can also be worked with like flash cards.

A little bit about my background in herbalism is I’m on my first year apprenticing with herbalist Robin Rose Bennett, and have been working in the apothecary at Tweefontein Herb Farm in New Paltz for the past three years, and gardening medicinal plants the past two seasons. I created this deck as my final project while studying with herbalist 7Song last year at the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine.

I also spent a few years working as a full time nanny and have helped with homeschooling and with distance learning while schools were closed during COVID. I noticed from working with kids that there is a need for more educational games to learn about medicinal plants, and that kids of all ages really enjoyed playing this kind of memory matching card game.

This deck was beautifully illustrated by local Hudson Valley artist EdieArt!

Edie is a painter and illustrator who’s been creating and offering her work in the NYC and Hudson Valley region for over 15 years. Her work is deeply inspired by connectedness, relation to self, others and the natural world. Her paintings are described as whimsical, comforting and sometimes mystical dreamscapes full of color and heart. In 2022, she illustrated her first deck- the Inner Child & Beyond oracle. She grew up in the Netherlands and now lives with her partner and daughter upstate New York.
