International Undertaking - The Gaucho Derby 2026
Donazione protetta
Adventure, conservation, and community – three aspects of life that I pursue and enjoy sharing.
The Gaucho Derby – a 10 day, 500 km horse race in the Patagonia mountains of Argentina, where I’ll ride up to 10 different horses on varying terrain. An opportunity with international reach for philanthropic and environmental action.
My name is Anna Dieffenbach. I grew up in Vermont, fueling a passion for the outdoors through trail riding on horseback, hiking, and skiing. I have pursued a career in wildlife conservation, working seasonally in rigorous field work positions. However, my life is shifting with my commitment to the Gaucho Derby.
Why am I determined to compete in the Gaucho Derby?
The epic adventure. Pushing my limits while pursuing passion. Experiencing a landscape in moments that can never be recreated. Making reality of travel I’d only ever dreamed of, and doing it all on the back of an animal whose power and heightened senses provide an observational and immersive experience.
But, why else?
History – Immersing in a remote and unique horse-centric community that takes pride in their perseverance of culture. Having opportunities to learn directly from the people in the Gaucho community.
Horses – The horses in Patagonia are incredible biological machines, and critical for the community’s function. Used almost exclusively for work, their behaviors may seem feral compared to the pets we often recognize horses as in the US. They’re hardy, fiery, intelligent, and authentic to the region. I’m beyond excited to admire these horses in person, test my adaptability for different methods in horsemanship, and find a unique partner in each horse I have the privilege of pairing with.
Conservation – Each competitor contributes to Cool Earth, a charity primarily working for rainforest protection and preservation. The Gaucho Derby aids my goal of assisting with large-scale action towards natural resource and wildlife conservation.
So, what are funds from subscriptions or GoFundMe used for?
For my entry fee, race crew, tech support, medics, veterinarians, race routes, Gaucho community members who own the land and horses… the list goes on. The entry fee includes some necessary equipment, like saddles and navigation devices. However, I will need to cover additional fees for travel, food, training, and personal attire.
The Gaucho Derby… a culmination of adventure. A result of contributing to worldwide conservation, supporting the longevity of a remote community, and honoring the history of a unique culture. Although an expensive endeavor, this has become an epic mission in my life.
The question is no longer “if” I can afford this, but “how” I will make this happen. Thus, I ask for donations to help pay for the components mentioned above. Every dollar helps.

Thank you in advance for your support. For more information, updates on training, and writing on the components of the derby, visit my blog at:
