Our 4 year old daughter was born at 29 weeks (11 weeks early) weighing just 2lb 3oz she spent 8 very scary weeks in intensive care before she was allowed home. When Jess was 4-6 months we started to realise something was wrong, jessie couldn't crawl,roll, sit up or even stay in a seated position if placed there, We had numerous tests and finally a brain scan done, shortly before her 2nd birthday Jess was diagnosed with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) which led on to her being diagnosed with diplegia, cerebral palsy affecting her lower limbs, the NHS funding was cut for the only operation that could have given Jess the life changing chance to balance, walk, run, ride a bike and enjoy life without her frame, and the endless falls she has. She is still possibly the happiest most determined little girl I've ever known. Jessica is a prime candidate to have Selective dorsal rhizotomy, its is a spinal operation that lasts 4 to 5 hours It involves opening the lower vertebrae to reveal the spinal cord which contains the neurones of the central nervous system. These neurones (bundles of nerve fibres) channel messages between the brain and different areas of the body. During the procedure, electrical stimulation is used to identify and sub-divide sensory and motor nerves. This process continues until the specific nerves and nerve roots affecting the spastic muscles are identified and cut.
