Paradise Fire Victims

Donation protected
The fire that ripped through the town of Paradise, 20 minutes from my home in Chico, has displaced an entire town of 26,000 people.  It spread so quickly that residents fled with only what they had on.  Paradise is a popular retirement location, and many of its residents were unable to drive or even ambulate.  Over 200 people are still missing, leaving their families fear the worst.

All over Chico, there are families living in shelters, tents and RV's.  This is not an affluent community and many families live paycheck to paycheck.  The fire burned most places of employment, so people are fully relying on government assistance and the generosity of others to get them through.

I have been collecting money from my friends and family back home in the Bay Area to purchase Walmart Gift Cards to give out to families with nothing left.  These gift cards allow them to purchase the necessities they lost and warm clothing for the winter.  I have given out over $800 so far; the recipients all in tears.  I wanted to keep the giving going, so if anyone would like to give even a small amount, it will mean so much.

A big thanks to Moyra, who encouraged me to start this campaign.  Thank you all for your support!

***Update - Over $1300 so far, wow!   I spoke to one of my colleagues about the best way to use the donations, and we decided that gift cards of $200 or $300 to many families will be a better use than giving a lump sum to one family.  This way many people can get the things they need to survive until the government assistance kicks in or the insurance starts paying.  THANK YOU ALL!
