If you know me at all, you know that I work my ass off. I've just spent the last few months teaching five college writing classes at once, and my eyeballs feel like orbs of molten coal and I want to nap! But instead, I am taking a big leap by taking off work for the summer to finish my book: a memoir about my brother's murder, falling in love, coming of age in the wake of loss, coming out as a queer artist, and being a young punk in the thick of the AIDS crisis. You can read some excerpts of my memoir here, in CutBank Literary Journal , and here, in Never Mind the Hormones , and here, in Original Plumbing .
I am 270 pages into this manuscript, and I need to power through the last 100 pages this summer. This project is extremely difficult to pick up for an hour before work or in the evenings. I've done best with contained and focused writing time where I can solely inhabit the world of this story.
And I need your help!
Any size donation is welcome. Your donation will allow me to cover my rent, super-expensive health insurance, feed me and my dog, and keep the lights on over my two months of no income!
My GoFundMe campaign is chock-full of amazing rewards: think weird yard sale of queer artifacts: I'm not asking for something for nothing here, people! So, if you want all of my vinyl record albums, or you want to bid on my belt buckle collection, or you'd like to be all cool with a set of vintage straight razors and a strop, or own my set of 1932 Hemingway novels, or maybe you want to come to Portland for a personal writing workshop where I will feed you (I'm a good cook) and put you up, I'm your guy! Look no further. I promise you, you will not find better perks for a campaign like this elsewhere.
Here's your chance to support the work of a queer, trans writer and help me to get my first book out into the world! Please make a contribution right now and take advantage of my rad perks!
Other ways you can help support my summer of book-finishing would be to take a class with me: I have an online LitReactor class starting up May 2, and am doing two one-day writing workshops in August at the historic Sou'wester Lodge in Seaview, Washington in case you want to book a writing retreat for yourself!
Or: you can contribute to my Patreon , and reap the enticing rewards of simple, low-key patronage support of my work.
The fourth way you can help? Make a straight-up donation –hey, maybe you are swimming in the cash and just feel so moved to kick down to a trans writer, and don't want to ding-dong around with all of that internet nonsense above. So, just send me money via paypal.me/CooperLeeB — I will thank you in the credits of my book and send you a signed copy once it is out in the world!
Thank you and huge gratitude for your support and belief in my work!
