Help Kelly Study Abroad In Taiwan!

Donation protected
I am excited to announce that I have been accepted into the College of Staten Island's Life Sciences in Taiwan study abroad program! The program is being lead by faculty from CSI's Biology department, and aims to explore ecology, forest management, marine biology, and other life sciences in several Taiwanese cities and towns over 21 days.

The program serves as 4-credit Biology class, and will complete my education at the College of Staten Island, allowing me to graduate with my A.S. this Summer.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I am eager to pursue! Studying in Taiwan would not only elevate my understanding of biology, ecology, and other natural sciences through the program's related coursework, but improve my understanding of subjects like environmental sociology and cultural ecology as well. Touring metropolitan areas like Taipei would provide invaluable insight to the urban environment of nations outside of the US, while less densely populated counties such as Hualien would grant proximity to sub-tropical features of nature that I have no access to here in New York. These are all incredibly exciting prospects for me!

Additionally, as someone invested in the ethical conservation of biodiversity, witnessing how the life sciences are practiced and implemented in a non-Western nation would increase my understanding of the relationships communities outside of my own have with their inhabited environments. This is invaluable to me, because sensitivity/exposure to other cultures would increase my chances of developing culturally literate solutions to environmental issues that do not harm existing communities and/or indigenous peoples.

I want do whatever I can to attend this program, because I sincerely believe it would make me a better scientist, student, and human being. However, I need help! The costs of the trip are as follows:

Program Cost: $2,280
(Includes: On-site program instruction and activities, housing, all breakfasts and one dinner, local and domestic administration, international medical and accident insurance, and orientations)
CUNY Tuition (4 credits): $1,180
Airfare: $1,400
Meals (lunch and dinner): $300
Personal expenses: $100-$200
US Passport: $145

These expenses add up to approximately $5,500 when rounded up.

I am waiting to hear back from a scholarship which may cover $2,000, and financial aid, which may take care of the $1,180 tuition. Even if I receive this aid, I will still need to supply $2,000+ dollars on my own.

Additionally, there is the option of pursuing Xiuguluan River Rafting and Whale Watching in Hualien for $70, and attending a Chinese Language Class (traditional Mandarin) for $110. I would love to pursue these optional activities if I am able to raise enough money to do so!

I am a full time student at the College of Staten Island studying Biology with a ~3.7 GPA. I currently maintain three jobs, all of which relate to the life sciences. I am excited to share that I have been accepted as a transfer student by SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) for the Fall 2019 semester, and I have been working seven days a week for the entirety of the Spring semester in order to afford my transfer and move to Syracuse. Due to those rivaling expenses, I unfortunately cannot afford to pay for the trip to Taiwan on my own, despite how much it would mean to me to get to go! This is why I have chosen to reach out to the generosity of others in order to try and make this dream come true!

I would like to thank anyone who is able to contribute to my campaign or share my campaign with others from the bottom of my heart. I truly believe this trip would be a life changing experience that I would treasure and draw from for the rest of my life!
