As many
of you know, I am a full-time artist and activist, passionately dedicated to using art as a medium for
social change. Recently, I embarked on an incredible journey by purchasing a beautiful church in
Richland County, North Dakota. My dream was/is to transform this sacred space into a community hub, a
pottery studio, and an artist-in-residency program, a sanctuary for creativity, learning, and communal
growth.
However after my cat was shot by one of my neighbors shot my cat approximately 12 times, I am no longer feeling safe in town. I hadn’t before this but now I especially don’t. My time here has been troubling, unexpected and scary but I will not give up. It is my hope that I’m able to use to funds and find a safe space that truly is a HOME. One where I feel loved , accepted and safe.
Not long ago, I was homelessness. I experienced the fear, uncertainty, and isolation that comes with not having a stable place to call home. Art was my lifeline during those difficult times, giving me purpose and hope. I am determined to create a space where others can find the same solace and support that I desperately needed.
Unfortunately this vision needs to take a back burner to my own mental health along with my cat’s physical healthy and safety. I’m not sure what that means right now but this give me the privilege of having options that we currently lack.
With heartfelt gratitude and hope,
- Evan Marnell
