No one who makes the tough decision to ask for help on GoFundMe takes it lightly. I've known Netta for only a short time, but in that time I've come to realize that she is TOUGH. She's a FIGHTER. Naturally, I was upset to find out that she and her family are in trouble due to something that happened to her 6 years ago. Something that could happen to ANY OF US without warning. I'm going to let her daughter, Sierra, tell you about it . . .
"On February 23, 2014, my mom, Netta, fell on the ice. Mom hit her head, this resulted in a closed head injury and she was later diagnosed with a Traumatic Brain Injury. The official diagnosis was Traumatic Brain Injury with Pseudotumor Cerebri with Intracranial Hypertension, a spinal cord lesion leading to a dry tap, and a right temporal hemorrhagic stroke leading to left sided weakness. In everyday terms this means that she was in a coma for a while, so that her body could heal.
When she woke up her memories were mostly gone, her thinking processing was significantly decreased along with her motor skills (both gross and fine motor skills). She had to relearn who everyone was again, how to move her arms and hands, how to write and basic communication skills. The first few years were the toughest as it was all unknown how far she was expected to recover. The nerve damage from the lesion in her spine ended up being a great obstacle and one she still struggles with daily.
Over the past 6 years, mom has struggled with her health that has resulted in many hospitalizations and setbacks. Mom averages about 6 hospitalizations per year since her initial accident. She has been hospitalized twice this year, had one surgery to relieve high fluid pressure on the brain and suffered another stroke which she is currently recovering from. She is making progress in her therapies.
Mom is a very private person and she doesn't like for us to reveal just how much help she requires on a daily basis. She uses a wheelchair and requires assistance with most of her daily activities. She also has a service dog, Fust, that helps us monitor her for any issues she may be experiencing. Her medical bills have risen to just above $158,000 after the insurance and partial forgiveness from the hospital. We are asking for help in gaining funds to help reduce this amount.
My mom was a Registered Nurse before her accident. She worked with many charity organizations as well, mainly concentrated on helping children in the US. It really hit her hard that she had to leave her nursing career and had to find other ways to occupy her time and mind. She went back to sewing in 2015 when she gained enough strength to do the task. Since then she has created many beautiful quilts and given them all away. Some to charities and others to loved ones. She also has learned other ways to be crafty, such as painting, sketching, cross stitching, crocheting, and designing quilts and bags. She is a very talented woman and modest."
