I was woken up by my roommate about 1:30am on Sunday night and was told my car got broken into and the windows were smashed. Having just gotten back from camping, I didn't unpack anything yet because I was exhausted and feared the worst, as we have had a recent string of theft at our complex and had to get the garage gate replaced with new openers.
Tired and panicky, I go down to our complex's garage and there is my car, the two right side windows entirely smashed, the front windshield is cracked, a box ripped open on the floor with a couple clothing items strewn about, and a large stick to which I assume is what was used to bust the windows. My roommate's car window was smashed as well as some other vehicles near the gate in the complex. The property managers were there and a couple other apartment neighbors, all in their pajamas and stressed out. We waited for the police to arrive
There was a neighbor that heard the commotion and saw through their window, she said there was about 6 boys who looked late teens-early 20s, as well as 2 girls who were getaway drivers. The police took our statements and information, said that other spots nearby were also hit and the neighborhood was being searched. I then proceeded to unpack my camping stuff and remove everything from my car. Thankfully, it appears nothing was stolen, at least from what I can tell so far. I had a cup of tea with the roomie to try to chill out before going back to bed.
I called my insurance the next morning to figure out how to get my my windows replaced, and was told that unfortunately my policy doesn't cover this type of situation and that I'll have to pay out of pocket to get it fixed. I had a little breakdown, as I have had a difficult time finding consistent work since moving to a new city, living paycheck to paycheck (when I have a paycheck, that is), with consistent financial hardships, I have no savings and have built up about 8 grand in credit card debt the past 6 months just trying to survive.
I did some shopping around and got a couple quotes. To get my shattered windows replaced from the break-in, it's going to cost me about $1200. Until I can find some more work (and believe me, I am trying- I had to take a break mid-moving to go to an interview) my car is going to sit there with the windows busted, I don't know how long that will be. This really, really sucks. So here I am now, asking for a little bit of assistance from friends, chosen family, and good people in my communities to lend me a helping hand in this terrible situation (for those that are able to). I can also take donations through other platforms (like my Venmo @KatanaFoxy) if preferred. I'm not expecting the goal to be met, but any amount of contribution towards this tragic occurrence will be a godsend.
I'm having a really hard time, doing my absolute best to keep my chin up and stay positive. There are some people in this world that love to cause destruction and despair, I just wish it wasn't geared towards those already in poverty. Life is already hard enough, ya feel. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this. Anything helps. I really am trying, but was reminded by good people that it's important to ask for help when it's really needed. Love you all.
