Bringing Lazy River Playground Back to Life
We are Doug and Sarah and we are on a mission to bring Lazy River Playground back to life and to improve the venue for the local community and future generations. Lazy River Playground has been a part of North Country life since 1942 when it was founded by Doug’s great-grandfather, John Grandy, and continued by his grandfather, Red Grandy, until 2018. Some of the buildings and entertainments on the grounds have been around since the ’50s and need of some TLC. It’s a big job to maintain a roller skating rink, a mini-golf course, event pavilions, cabin rentals, shuffleboard courts, and trails.
From May to October we host family reunions, birthday parties, weddings, school reunions, class trips and wellness retreats. Our guests enjoy old-time roller skating, mini-golfing on our antique course, barbecuing and time on the waterfront or walking the grounds. There is nothing like us in the North Country.
During COVID, we decided it was important to open Lazy River Playground again so that the local families would have a place to gather and have some fun together while still observing social distancing. We weren’t sure what the response would be, but we wanted to do our part to help. Attendance was beyond our expectations our first summer. We have been steadily making improvements to the structures and buying new skates since 2020. Now we have a lot of projects that need to happen all at once and therefore it is time for us to ask for help.
We are looking to raise $50,000 to replace the mini-golf shack and the golf course fence, expand the outdoor bathrooms into an insulated/ heated bath house with showers, and update and improve the wiring to meet the current and future needs of Lazy River Playground and Retreat Center. Any additional funds raised will go toward renovating the skate hall and improving the trail system on our 175 acres.
Your donations will go directly to building supply costs and labor. Donations in any amount would be greatly appreciated. Major donors will have their names added to our Wall of Fame next to our golf course.
