Dear supporter, please help us to secure feed and bedding for our precious residents. We currently have 98 donkeys in direct care and at this stage of the year are running dangerously low on supplies having secured both in early Autumn. A large number of donkeys have arrived at the sanctuary over the winter period and unfortunately foster homes are few and far between so we have watched our numbers rise steadily.
As you can imagine organisations such as ourselves are struggling to keep going in the current financial climate. The spiralling cost of living crisis is affecting every home and family and people naturally have less to give to sanctuaries such as ourselves.
Sadly the one constant in these changing times is the sheer number of donkeys that need to be fed and sheltered as life deals them a cruel blow through no fault of their own. This could be abandonment or sadly losing a loving family who can no longer afford to provide for their needs.
Sanctuary for these souls is as important as it has ever been and we are committed to being there for them. In seventeen years of operation we have never had to turn a donkey away and this is not something we plan to do in the immediate future.
Haylage, hay, straw and meal/nuggets are priced at an all time high and this of course comes at a time where diesel costs are also rocketing. We have had to battle to keep going from last September until now but would need the help of our wonderful supporters to get us further ‘down the road’. The sheer amount of rain that has fallen this month so far will delay outdoor grazing and lengthen the amount of months that we must rely on our fodder reserves. We need to plan for the months ahead and make sure that we do not let them down.
Our Story
We took in our first rescue back in 2006 with no plans whatsoever to have a donkey sanctuary! It was purely an act of kindness to a beautiful animal who was found tied to a scrapped car in an area of bog land and left for dead. We heard about his plight and offered him a home and loving care. As he blossomed before our eyes and showed us the loving and above all forgiving nature of donkeys we were hooked and so our journey had begun! Many, many more followed with close to 900 rehomed over the years. What started out as the addition of an extra pet to the family has become so much more and we could not imagine our lives any other way. It is our dearly held wish to continue with our rescue work for many years to come so that there will always be a place of sanctuary for those who need it most.
