I’m creating this GoFundMe in loving memory of my 3-year-old neighbour and friend, Asia (pronounced Ah-see-ya), who was tragically and senselessly run over while sitting near the curb in our townhouse complex on Sunday, July 13th, 2025.

This wasn’t just a townhouse complex full of children—it was a village of children growing up together.

Asia was struck by a distracted driver turning left in the complex—while he was on his phone, according to her 11-year-old brother. He told me he tried to run and save her—but it was too late. Asia’s life was cut short because of another distracted driver.

Asia was the youngest child of an Afghan refugee family who moved to Canada just last year. Despite the challenges of resettling in a new country, this family brought so much warmth and light to our community.

Asia adored animals—especially my dog, Sky—whom she would stop to pet every time she saw us on our walks. She was always surrounded by her loving siblings: two older sisters, around 10 and 12, and her protective 11-year-old brother. They played together daily at the playground just outside my home, always watching over their baby sister.

What inspired me most about Asia’s family was their joy, their kindness, and their openness—even with the language barrier. Her brother would greet me every time I passed by, whether in my car or on a walk. Just last month, I ran into them outside, and when I mentioned it was Sky’s birthday, they all broke into song, singing “Happy Birthday” with huge smiles. They are lovely, compassionate children—bright lights in our neighborhood.

I spoke with Asia’s siblings, who were there and witnessed what happened. I know these kids—they are good, kind-hearted children who look out for the younger ones in our neighborhood. I would never want them to carry the weight of blame or guilt. They do not deserve this.
