3 mo dialysis for my Mom, a Venezuelan Professor

Hi. My name is Gabriel, and I seek help for my severely ill Mom, Gladys, a retired University Professor from Venezuela. In recent years, her health deteriorated due to a chronic kidney disease that aggravated fast. Starting in October 2018, she has started requiring regular dialysis, which is required in a life or death manner. I live and work in Magdeburg, Germany as a PhD student. Thanks to the help of the German Embassy at Venezuela, my Mom was provided with an emergency visa for family reunification on the case of severe health risks. Thanks to this she can live by my side, and receive a care that would be impossible for me to provide in Venezuela (in part due to the hyper-inflation, shortage of medicines, food, resources, public or private health care , and also since I work to build my life in Germany, and we have no more family than each other).

During this past year we have been trying to have some form of insurance to help us, if not cover regular treatment, at least provide a safety net such that she can be taken care of correctly.  Unfortunately, both statutory health insurance and private insurance companies from Germany rejected our application. Currently we are awaiting (since October 2019) for a local court's decision regarding the feasibility of starting a legal process that would give us a path to some form of insurance. The court already has a medical opinion that states the urgency of the situation, so we assumed that the process will be expedited to a degree; however we still wait without a sense for how long it might take.

Each month the dialysis treatment (3 times a week) costs around 3000 euros, apart from extra medications (such as EPO), laboratory work, hospitalizations, emergency ambulance transport or others.

Nowadays (and since October 2018) we struggle greatly to cover her treatment. Often we can only afford to take her to only one session a week, and we can spend stretches of time without being able to afford the medications. This is taking a toll on her health, and she is still not in a state as good as she would be if we gave a stable treatment and medication. Due to debts accrued from not having even the tiniest bit of insurance as a safety net for health expenses, it becomes impossible to finance her care indefinitely.  We require an arrangement that would enable for long-term care, either supported by some form of insurance, or by any other way (if you have any suggestions or tips, they will be greatly appreciated).

In this difficult situation I have decided to start a Go Fund Me campaign to help her situation. I do so with incredible humility, in the knowledge that there are so many people facing more dire situations than ours. But I also start this campaign with a deep sense of responsibility:  I have to do everything in my power to take care of her, since my Mom has really no one else. We hope that this campaign will help us to cover 3 months of dialysis (February-April). We hope that this will give time for a court decision . It will also help us to partially recover from debts, enabling us to afford more care beyond those 3 months have passed. Finally, this will also help us to gain time for finding a solution to our situation.

In spite of the disease, which has also affected her cognitive skills to an extent, my Mom is an enthusiastic, kind spirit, who loves classical music, children, long conversations, and is always trying to make jokes to nurses beyond the language barriers. She has lived a beautiful life, making bachelor studies in Venezuela on Biology, later on as a Master student at Utah State University, and as a PhD student in Massey University, New Zealand, where she earned her Doctorate. She taught for 25 years in the Unellez University and Universidad Central, in Venezuela. She helped the formation of hundreds of students, and did a lot of research work. Personally, I owe a lot of my spirit, my ideals and values, to my Mom. I cannot bear to let her down. With proper care I trust that she can get better, and lead a bright life for her remaining years.

Any help for our campaign will be incredibly appreciated, no matter how small. Please help now. We will do our best to make the help go a long way.

Also, if our situation turns out to be resolved with re-reimbursement from an insurance for some of our expenses, we will donate back (as much as possible from the amount we raise with this campaign), to other dialysis patients in Go Fund Me and groups for humanitarian help to Venezuela.

Other than help with the campaign, any hint of legal advice, suggestions for places of treatment that might be more affordable, or other information which could help our situation (no matter how small it might seem!), would be greatly treasured by us.

Hey, mein Name ist Gabriel und ich suche Hilfe für meine schwerkranke Mutter Gladys, einer pensionierten Biologie-Universitätsprofessorin aus Venezuela. Sie leidet unter einer chronischen Nierenerkrankung nach einer Infektion und ist seit Oktober 2018 dialysepflichtig. Da ich zur Zeit als Doktorand arbeite und sich die politische und medizinische Situation in Venezuela sstetig verschlechtert hat, musste ich meine Mutter über ein Notfallvisum nach Deutschland holen. Leider haben wir keine weitere Familie in Venezuela, die meine Mutter unterstützen könnte. Außerdem würden die medizinischen Strukturen in der aktuellen politischen Lage des Landes eine adäquate Behandlung nicht erlauben . 

Im letzten Jahr haben wir versucht, alle möglichen offiziellen Schritte zu gehen, um eine geregelte Versorgung zu ermöglichen. Allerdings herrscht zur Zeit noch Uneinigkeit, ob meine Mutter einen rechtlichen Anspruch auf eine Versicherung hat oder nicht. Unglücklicherweise dauert die rechtliche Klärung mit der privaten Krankenkasse länger als geplant, obwohl dem Gericht bereits ein Dringlichkeitsantrag aufgrund der medizinischen Situation meiner Mutter vorliegt. In dieser Wartezeit habe ich allerdings weiterhin keine andere Wahl die Dialyse meiner Mutter vollständig selbst zu zahlen. Ich bemühe mich sehr, ihr alle Therapiemöglichkeiten, die sie benötigt, möglich zu machen, allerdings kommen wir langsam an unsere Grenzen.

Die Dialysebehandlung (3-mal pro Woche) kostet jeden Monat rund 3000 Euro, ohne zusätzliche lebensnotwendige Medikamente, Laboruntersuchungen, notfallmäßige Krankenhausaufenthalte, Notfallkrankentransporte oder ähnliches. Aufgrund der sehr hohen Kosten müssen wir teilweise
die Anzahl der nötigen Sitzungen reduzieren, auf Medikamente verzichten oder Schulden aufnehmen. Dies riskiert nicht nur den ohnehin schon schlechten Gesundheitszustand meiner Mutter, es belastet auch unsere allgemeine Wohn- und Lebenssituation dramatisch. Wir benötigen eine Vereinbarung, die eine Langzeitpflege ermöglicht, die entweder durch eine Versicherung oder auf andere Weise unterstützt wird (wenn Sie Vorschläge oder Tipps haben, sind diese sehr willkommen).

In dieser schwierigen Situation habe ich beschlossen, um Eure und Ihre Hilfe zu bitten. Ich tue dies mit unglaublicher Demut, in dem Wissen, dass es so viele Menschen gibt, die mit schlimmeren Situationen konfrontiert sind als wir. Aber langsam scheint mir keine andere Wahl mehr zu bleiben, da ich als Sohn nicht tatenlos zusehen kann, während es meiner Mutter von Tag zu Tag schlechter geht. Mit dieser Kampagne würden wir gerne versuchen, Geld für die Dialyse in einem Zeitraum von 3 Monaten zu sammeln, in der Hoffnung, dass bis dahin eine offizielle Regelung gefunden werden kann.  

Trotz der Krankheit, die auch ihre kognitiven Fähigkeiten in gewissem Maße beeinträchtigt hat, ist meine Mutter ein begeisterter, freundlicher Geist, der klassische Musik, Kinder und lange Gespräche liebt und immer versucht, mit den Krankenschwestern über die Sprachgrenzen hinweg Witze zu machen. Sie hat in Venezuela ihr Bachelor-Studium und später ihr Master-Studium an der Utah State University in den USA absolviert und als Doktorandin an der Massey University in Neuseeland promoviert. Sie unterrichtete 25 Jahre an der Unellez University und der Universidad Central in Venezuela. Sie half bei der Ausbildung von Hunderten von Studenten und leistete viel Forschungsarbeit. Persönlich verdanke ich meiner Mutter viel von meinem Geist, meinen Idealen und Werten. Ich kann es nicht ertragen, sie im Stich zu lassen. Mit der richtigen Sorgfalt vertraue ich darauf, dass es ihr besser geht und sie für die verbleibenden Jahre ein gutes Leben führen kann.

Hola. Me llamo Gabriel y busco ayuda para mi Mamá, Gladys, una profesora universitaria jubilada, Venezolana. En los últimos años, su salud se deterioró debido a una enfermedad renal crónica que se agravó rápidamente. A partir de octubre de 2018, comenzó a requerir diálisis. Vivo y trabajo en Magdeburg, Alemania como estudiante de doctorado. Gracias a la ayuda de la Embajada de Alemania en Venezuela, mi Mamá recibió una visa de emergencia para la reunificación familiar en caso de una enfermedad grave. Gracias a esto, ella puede vivir a mi lado y recibir una atención que sería imposible para mí brindarle en Venezuela (en parte debido a la hiperinflación, la escasez de medicamentos, alimentos, recursos, atención médica pública o privada , y también ya que estoy construyendo mi vida en Alemania, y no tenemos más familia cercana que nosotros dos).

Durante el año pasado, hemos tratado de tener algún tipo de seguro que nos ayude, si no para cubrir el tratamiento regular, al menos para proporcionar una red de seguridad para que pueda ser atendida correctamente. Lamentablemente, tanto las compañías de seguros estatales como las privadas en Alemania han rechazado nuestra solicitud. Actualmente estamos esperando (desde octubre de 2019) la decisión de un tribunal local con respecto a la viabilidad de iniciar un proceso legal que nos dé un camino hacia algún tipo de seguro. El tribunal ya tiene una opinión médica que establece la urgencia de la situación, por lo que asumimos que el proceso se acelerará hasta cierto punto; Sin embargo, todavía esperamos sin saber cuánto tiempo puede tomar el proceso.

Cada mes, el tratamiento de diálisis (3 veces por semana) cuesta alrededor de 3000 euros, además de medicamentos adicionales (como EPO), examenes de laboratorio, gastos de hospitalizacion, transportes de emergencia en ambulancia y otros.

Hoy en día (desde Octubre 2018) luchamos mucho para cubrir su tratamiento. A menudo solo podemos permitirnos llevarla a una sola sesión por semana, y podemos pasar largos períodos de tiempo sin poder pagar los medicamentos. Esto está afectando su salud, y ella no se encuentra en un estado tan bueno como lo estaría si le dieramos un tratamiento estable y los medicamentos requeridos. Debido a las deudas acumuladas por no tener ni siquiera un minimo seguro que nos sirva como una pequeña red de seguridad para gastos de salud, se hace imposible financiar su atención indefinidamente.  Requerimos de un arreglo que nos permita proveerle un cuidado a largo plazo, bien sea a traves del apoyo parcial de un seguro medico, o de alguna otra solucion (agradecemos mucho sugerencias y consejos, sobre lo que podriamos hacer).

En esta difícil situación, he decidido comenzar una campaña Go Fund Me para ayudarla. Lo hago con increíble humildad, sabiendo que hay tantas personas que enfrentan situaciones más graves que la nuestra. Pero también comienzo esta campaña con un profundo sentido de responsabilidad: tengo que hacer todo lo que esté a mi alcance para cuidarla, ya que mi Mamá realmente no tiene a nadie más. Esperamos que esta campaña nos ayude a cubrir 3 meses de diálisis (Febrero-Abril). Esperamos que esto dé tiempo para una decisión judicial. También nos ayudará a recuperarnos parcialmente de las deudas, permitiéndonos pagar tratamiento más allá de esos 3 meses. Finalmente, esto también nos ayudará a ganar tiempo para encontrar una solución a nuestra situación.

A pesar de la enfermedad, que también ha afectado sus habilidades cognitivas hasta cierto punto, mi mamá es un espíritu entusiasta y amable, que ama la música clásica, los niños, las conversaciones largas y siempre trata de hacer bromas a las enfermeras más allá de las barreras del idioma. Ella ha vivido una vida hermosa, haciendo estudios de licenciatura en Venezuela, más tarde como estudiante de maestría en la Universidad Estatal de Utah y como estudiante de doctorado en la Universidad de Massey, Nueva Zelanda, donde obtuvo su doctorado. Enseñó durante 25 años en la Universidad Unellez y la Universidad Central, en Venezuela. Ayudó a la formación de cientos de estudiantes e hizo muchos trabajos de investigación. Personalmente, le debo mucho de mi espíritu, mis ideales y valores a mi Mamá. No puedo soportar decepcionarla. Con el cuidado adecuado, confío en que ella pueda mejorar y llevar una vida brillante durante los años restantes.
