We’re raising funds for all of us to have ongoing housing security. We are three generations who have lived together since my granddaughter was born. I (Grandma Laurie) am in my 70’s and am currently housed temporarily in two rooms along with my loving daughter and precious granddaughter, with no funds for rent, and no place to go at the end of January. We were displaced from our apartment home of seven years in August 2023, wrongfully evicted, based on a widespread eviction scam. Our local legal aid was overwhelmed. We faced our landlord’s lawyers on our own.

My daughter and I are not able to work at this time. My pension as a retired teacher with minimal social security, is the same as my daughter’s very low fixed income on disability. With careful budgeting, together, these cover food, bills and gas. This income does not cover rent, which has risen SKY high in Sacramento. We’ve found the lowest 2 bedroom available, in a historically very low income neighborhood to be $1,800 a month, practically our entire combined income.

I’ve spent countless hours, up till 3 AM, writing, researching, connecting with government services, non-profits, local officials, and grassroots organizations which help get unhoused people housed. Even so, if not for the help of very close family friends, we would have been on the street during the whole month of September. All of our efforts to find assistance got us one month of paid rent. This is not enough to prevent us from being on the street at the end of January. Gratefully, we are currently listed in the housing emergency system, which sets the foundation for accessing ongoing emergency funding towards stable housing in a healthy, safe environment.

After this exhausting, extremely stressful situation, we feel this GOFUNDME is our last chance for providing our family with one stable year of housing security, to give my granddaughter one stable year of schooling, and to keep us off the street. Towards this end, we humbly ask your help to restart with a stable one year lease, in an apartment of our own. We’re looking to raise $25,000 to verify to prospective landlords: we can pay rent on an apartment for one year. We have responsible tenant and character references. We are generous people. We have faith that you are too.
