My name in Mark Wafer. I have been married to my wife for 36 years. We have two sons and three grandsons. I have always been a very active person who loves fishing. I am a active member in my church. When I was 44 years old I noticed weakness in my right hand but continued to work and live through this new obstacle. In 2006 I went to a doctor which thought that it was a pinched nerve causing my right side to be weak. At 46 years old (2007) I was started on a medication for Parkison's. In 2008, I recieved a official, life changing diagnosis of Parksinsons. After the diagnosis I continued to follow up with my neruologist and medication adjustment were made as my symptoms worsened. Over the past 2-3 years my symptoms have increased causing a significant decline in my ablity to do the day to day activities that most people take for granted. My tremors have worsened. Between the sluggishness and rigidity, walking has become a grueling task. Communication has been negatively affected my ablility to speak has become exhausing and burdensome. Pleasant sleep has become a thing of the past as involuntary movements jolt me awake in the middle of the night. Hope on the horizon. I recently sent in a video of myself to the University of Maryland showing how Parkinson's affects my life without the medication and then the effect with taking my medications. (You can find these videos on this campaing page) They called me the following day saying I am a perfect canidate for the new clinical trial sponsored by InSightec out of the University of Maryland. If the outcome of the clinical trial is not effective, deep brain stimulation will be the next step. Deep brain stimulation is a very costly, two part sugery, in which a pulse generator is implanted under the collarbone and is connected by wire to an electrode under the scalp. The financial burden associated with this treatment is tremendous. My insurance will only cover 70 percent. It is estimated that my copay would be appoximatley $40,000. This will help travel expenses and copays. With this expense we won't possibly be able to afford all of it. Any amount that you can spare is greatly appreciated and will take me one step, one word, one good nights sleep closer to relief. Freedom to move around, to socialize, to drive, to laugh and to live. Please pray for a positive outcome, I have such great hope and truly believe in the power of prayer.
Thank you
