Hope for Emily in the midst of uncertainty

Donation protected
Thank you for standing with me. After months of silence, I want to share that for the last week, my mum has been breathing on her own without mechanical ventilation - a miraculous milestone. She remains stable, though not fully responsive yet.

Ongoing Fundraising
Since being discharged from hospital to a nursing home on 2 January 2025, the journey hasn’t gotten easier. The final hospital bill was just under £55,000, an unimaginable figure but sadly common for most underinsured people in Kenya. It was covered through the incredibly generous donations, personal loans, savings, and earnings.

My Mum continues to need ongoing critical nursing care and costs are also significant - averaging £7,000 per month since January. The care my Mum is receiving has made a world of difference.

Despite doing our best, we currently face arrears of £3,375.

How You Can Help
Even the smallest gift makes a world of difference. Every prayer is a petition for her healing, and lifts our spirits.

Here’s a breakdown of daily and weekly care costs:
  • £5/day – Routine medication (e.g., for high blood pressure, clots, seizures)
  • £32/day – Physiotherapy (essential, as she is currently immobile)
  • £47/day – Accommodation, meals, and daily vitals checks
  • £62.50/week – Weekly doctor reviews
  • £75/day – 24-hour critical nursing care

Thank you again. For giving. For praying. For believing with me.

02-Dec-2024

For the last six weeks, my beloved mum, Emily, has been fighting multiple severe medical complications, including sepsis, a blood clot in her brain, severe pneumonia, and massive haemorrhaging.

Her condition took a turn for the worse on 21 November 2024, and she is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Nairobi, unconscious and on life support. Dedicated doctors, nurses and other health professionals are working tirelessly to save her life.

My mum has always been a beacon of kindness, compassion, and generosity. She has given so much to her family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, and community. Now, we are asking for your help to save her life.

The cost of her medical care has skyrocketed since she was admitted to the ICU. Unfortunately, her diagnosis comes at a time when the health insurance system in Kenya is broken, leaving many like my mum underinsured and unable to afford the necessary medical care.

Every donation is a gift of hope, contributing to my mum's medical expenses and ensuring she has the best chance for a full recovery. Your generosity, no matter the amount, will make a significant difference in her fight for life.

My mum would not want her story to be just about her struggle; she would want to raise awareness about the broken healthcare and insurance systems in Kenya. We hope her journey will inspire efforts for systemic changes that prioritise the health needs of all Kenyans, regardless of income.

Thank you for taking the time to read my Mum's story. Your prayers and support means the world to us, and we are hopeful that, with your help, she will overcome this battle and fully recover.

With heartfelt thanks,
Marsha Waititu (née Jones)
