Hi I'm Alex Buday and I'm asking for help for my brother Jackson Buday. Jack got very ill with Guillian-Barre Syndrome this spring. This is an auto immune syndrome that attacks the nerves and muscles. It starts out slowly usually in the fingers and toes, and moves up your body, it can affect the breathing muscles too. Thats what happened to Jackson.
My brotherJack is a 20 yr. old sophmore at Michigan State University. He is from Charlevoix, Michigan. Jack is a very healthy great guy. He's very athletic, outgoing and studious. He's studying International Relations in the James Madison College at MSU and hopes to work overseas someday. We come from a large family, and Jack is the fourth oldest of six. We all ran Cross Country in High school and like to do a lot of things together. We still spend alot of time together whenever we can. When Jack got sick we were very scared.

In March Jack callled my mom and said his hand and feet were numb. The next day he went to the campus health center, they drew some blood and sent him to the Emergency Department because his platelets were so low, at 30. My mom and brother Eric met him at the ED. He was discharged that evening and was going to follow up with a specialist that week. The next morning when he woke up he couldn't hold his head up, and he couldn't walk straight. They went right back to the ED at 730am and by the next morning @ 4am he couldn't breathe on his own and he was intubated and on a ventilator. Then he developed pneumonia and had to have a bronchoscopy, a scope that goes into the lungs, eight times to keep it cleared out. We could only communicate with him on paper. Usually he could only write 1-2 words because he was so weak. He had tubes coming out of his mouth, neck , arm and bladder. He wasn't able to move anything most of the time. He had to have a special treatment called plasmapheresis to filter his blood and remove the harmful antibodies. He had 5 of those treatments. He also had to have a tracheotomy.
Our whole family including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, sister and parents took turns being with Jackson. Someone was always with him every night. Many friends and classmates visited during his whole hospitalization too. Just about everyone in our town helped us, either by bringing food, sending cards, or helping me and my brother and sister back home in Charlevoix.
Jack slowly has been recovering. He slowly regained ability to move his arms, hands, legs and feet. We were amazed when he was able to take some steps. Slowly he regained his ability to breathe and swallow on his own. It was great when he was able to talk to us again, and finally to breathe on his own. His trach site is still healing. He had to withdraw from school and will spend this summer completing his spring classes. He is still getting physical and occupational therapy. The doctor said it would take him about a year to be back to 100%. The great blessing is that he will fully recover!
We are asking for financial help to assist with the medical expenses from hospitalization and home bills from the time my parents took off work to be with Jack.
We appreciate all the blessings and support we've received from our family friends and community. Its been amazing to have so many people help all of us during this hard time. We will also being having some fundraisers @ St. Mary's!
There are no words to express the gratitude our family feels for all the love, kindness and prayers. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!
Thank you
Alex Buday
