Save a blind man's best friend

    Allan Shelly needs your help! Allan is a life long resident of Bucks County and has lived in Doylestown for the past 25 years. Allan has a condition called retinitis pigmentosa, a progressive, degenerative disorder which leads to vision loss. He has been going blind since early childhood. He is now legally blind and up until recently had been using the aid of a Seeing Eye Dog. This dog is named Joey and he came into Allan's life 12 years ago. He has been a faithful guide dog, leading Allan to places that he could never navigate to himself. Allan has literally trusted Joey with his life all these years.  He has not only given Allan freedom and independence but untold love and joy. They are best friends and their bond is strong and inspiring. Joey will turn 14 years old this June and is now officially retired. He has worked hard and deserves to live out his days now just being a dog. Allan intends to keep him as happy and comfortable as possible during his golden years.


    Unfortunately, things have taken a somber turn. Joey was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer. The tumor puts pressure on his bladder causing occasional urinary accidents. Allan has been able to manage with doggie diapers and frequent potty breaks.  Recently, Joey had an accident in the hallway of the apartment building where he and Allan have been living for the past 15 years. This did not go unnoticed by the landlord.  Joey is currently on medication to shrink his tumor and Allan has been vigilant  with his management of the occasional incontinence. Still,  his landlord has given him an ultimatum. He must get rid of Joey or face eviction.

    

     Allan is devastated. He doesn't want to put his best friend to sleep just because of his landlord. Joey still has a wonderful quality of life.  He is still feeling great and loving life. He eats like a pig and acts like a puppy! Allan contacted the Seeing Eye organization but they said nothing can be done legally since Joey is now retired. I am starting this page to raise enough money for Allan to be able to move to a new apartment/place that accepts pets.  I want to raise enough money for the first and last month's rent plus a security deposit. Any extra will go directly to Allan to help meet the struggles of his daily cost of living.  It is important that he stays in  Doylestown.  He knows the area and can get around easiest there. Everything he needs must be in walking distance for him.  Allan has 2 months to find a new place.

  Allan plays the organ and piano at church.  He also gives private piano lessons.  The income from these things is not even enough for him to pay his bills.  He is truly heartbroken. To let Joey go is just unthinkable but he can't afford a move either.  He needs our help. Allan is a man of great faith and determination.
