Dear family, friends, colleagues and sisters in arms.

My indomitable and strong hearted sister Marisela Rangel-Schleiger was surprised to receive the overwhelming and disturbing news of her husband having been terminated from his employment. Marisela, loving mother of 3, dedicated sister and devoted daughter, was then, not long after that dilemma, diagnosed with the devastating malady of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (Breast Cancer) on January 22nd, 2016. The specific form of breast cancer that she has been plagued with, is Her2 Positive, which is nothing less than aggressive.
My brother in law, Brian, has never ceased to give his helping hand in her time of need. Being the loving husband that he is, he continues to help my sister in any way that he can while still fighting a battle of his own. Even with battling Crohn’s and paying the medical bills that come with it, he finds time in each of his days to look for a job and take care of their 3 irreplaceable cherubs. These 3 cherubs, as busy and petrified as they may be, have a soft, kind, and solicitous heart, and aid their loving mother as knights would protect their queen.
Marisela’s loving parents (Tomasa and Carlos) have kept her company on every occasion for her weekly chemotherapy sessions. I, her bother Eugene, have switched my work schedule drastically to accommodate any needs for transportation and additional help. I have also attended the many sessions she goes through and try to keep her mind off of things and tell her amusing stories to smooth out the time consuming process. With unconditional moral support from her family, Marisela maintains herself active in the duties required of her daily life.
Patients that come in to the optometry where Marisela works, stand in awe to see her show up day after day and work her nine-to-five shift. Marisela has always been a vigorous person and active role model, and she did not want to bring her employment to a grinding halt. Medical insurance came to an end because of her husband’s lack of employment, and the expenses have begun to be paid out of pocket and hopefully through the assistance of many kind folks, we will be able to pay for those medical bills.
Despite the grueling side effects of chemotherapy (incessant insomnia, spontaneous sense of nausea, and sometimes insatiable amounts of bodily pain) Marisela continues to serve her purpose as possibly one of the most difficult jobs on the planet—being a mother. When her treatments first began, she was working seven and-a-half hours, then after a few more, she had to reduce the amount of time she worked. And now, this has become too much for her; so she has decided to take time off. Marisela’s son Devin (an AP-Honors student) helps out as much as possible with his younger siblings Seth and Adeline. Getting the children ready for school, preparing meals and assisting with homework is no easy task.
Major treatment is scheduled every 3 weeks with minor procedures, weekly dosages, in between (Doses of Carboplatin, Docetaxel and Herceptin are done throughout the 3 weeks). Every week Marisela is mentally and physically drained, but she still manages to run a relatively productive life. She continues to be a Rosie the Riveter of present times.
All of us in the family, continue to give countless amounts of support in any way we can, and advance slowly but steadily, through this new challenge. The Journey that God has put Marisela on is not an easy one. We appreciate and are in abiding debt to all those that join us in our journey. With your thoughts, good will, and financial support, it is possible that we will prevail. With Faith and perpetual prayer we will see this mission through. Love God, love life and love the amazing people that form part of our lives.
