Lee is a 92 year old World War II and Korean War era Veteran (US Army and US Air Force). He was a co-founder of Tidewater Bicycle Association in Virginia Beach and an active member of the Chuckatuck Chainring Cycling group.
Lee had to stop cycling a couple of years ago due to balance issues. He was giving away his cycling equipment when he learned about my cycling program for ill, injured, and wounded Veterans. I loaned Lee a recumbent trike that I personally purchased for the program, and he has been riding it for the past six months. He's up to 20-30 miles 2-3 times a week. Lee has been absolutely thrilled to be able to ride again. One day as we passed a golf course, I asked Lee if he golfed. He said golf is for old people! He rides several times a week and also swims and lifts weights.
My cycling program is growing. Injured and wounded active duty members and Veterans are contacting me to ride and also need to use my recumbent to heal. The upright bikes and recumbent that I loan out are for temporary use for the rider to decide if cycling is for them. If they decide it is, then I link them with various non-profits who will help them get a bike or recumbent trike.
Unfortunately, Lee doesn't fit the parameters for the usual non-profit support and doesn't have the financial wherewithall to purchase a recumbent trike himself. The cost is about $3000 for the trike, several hundred to get a shop to put it together, plus the cost of pedals, a simple computer, spare tubes, and a pump.
Won't you help keep Lee rolling? I can tell you the twinkle in his fierce blue eyes and the joy he expresses when he rides is priceless.
Thanks.
