My name is Loic Marcon and I am from San Francisco, CA! Last year I attended University of Washington with the intention of studying Public Health and minoring in either Urban Planning or Statistics.
Unfortunately this far in the year I have not been able to attend UW as a sophomore. My mother was laid off from her job and the tuition costs were too high. Both my parents have always worked in the food industry, making it difficult to set aside money for college especially after putting my older sister through 4 years of undergrad before me. This, in conjunction with the incredibly high costs of living in the Bay Area has made it impossible for me to continue on at UW
At UW, I made Dean's List for the entirety of my Freshman year taking on difficult coursework in International Relations, Epidemiology, and more. My current GPA is a 3.55 and I achieved a 3.7 in my Viral Outbreaks course and a 4.0 in my class titled The Making of the 21st Century.
I was Recruitment Chair of my fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, with the goal of helping students at our large university find a great group of friends for their undergrad years and beyond. I played for University of Washington Men's Club Soccer team. Additionally, I held a position as a Brand Ambassador for Seattle Sounders FC.
My plans for sophomore year included writing for the UW Daily (I was editor-in-chief for my high school paper The Paper Tiger), pursuing Student Government, and engaging more with the Public Health community.
Attending UW is essential for me because of my aspirations after graduating. With a Public Health degree from UW, I hope to learn how Public Health influences the ways our cities are constructed and how that can have an impact on entire communities. My goal is to graduate and work either in health consulting or real estate and play a central role in developing cities for the health challenges of the future.
As my mother gets back on her feet, so am I. I am currently working 25-30 hours a week at Peet's Coffee and plan on taking 7 courses at Berkeley City College to complete some credits to be eligible for transfer at UC's. However, there is no guarantee that all of my UW credits transfer over because I took courses my freshman year that were very particular to UW.
I never intended to transfer in the first place, so this last few months has been incredibly difficult leaving a place where I felt so incredibly happy. As I meet other transfer students, they've outlined their reasons for transferring and that can all be deduced to one idea: they didn't like their school. For me, the only thing holding me back from having the best college experience I could possibly ask for is finances. At UW, I was challenged academically, made great friends, and discovered a life in Seattle that I plan on pursuing beyond undergrad.
I am asking for your contribution as a little extra support to help send me back for Spring of the 2019 year (begins in April) so I can get back to achieving my degree in 4 years! With this money, we can begin the process of setting aside money monthly to pay tuition as I request revisions to my financial aid and apply for separate scholarships. I can't begin to express how much any contribution would be appreciated.
With love,
Loic
