Help Paul Go to University!!
My name is Paul Phiri, I am 20 years old, from Lusaka Zambia. I was raised by my aunts and uncles in Lusaka. I currently live in the Bauleni Housing Compound in Lusaka, at the RHO Appleseed Community Center .
I completed my high school in 2014, with Merits and Credits in first division. I have always had a dream to continue my education at University, but have not been able to afford the fees.
In 2014 I joined RHO Appleseed Community Center, as a volunteer. I wanted to be a part of this great project that Joy and Ken Hoffman were establishing in my community. As time went by, I was hired full time as a librarian and I am now the manager of the center. In this capacity, I run the day to day operations of center activities and I tutor kids in Math and English and Computer Literacy. Because I am very interested in technology, I offer free computer literacy classes at Appleseed, as well. There is a lot of desire in the community to become computer literate.
Working at Appleseed has been a great experience for me. I have had the opportunity to meet many different people who have both taught and inspired me. I would like to acknowledge and thank these great individuals who have volunteered at the center and helped me grow as an individual.
Thank you to Mr. Sergio Ramirez for teaching me to use Excel spreadsheets. This is a skill that I have been able to directly apply to my work at Appleseed. I can now keep all necessary records in this way. Thank you, also the the rest of the Ramirez family. Jill and Julia for coming each week to teach geography lessons, Katy for tutoring kids in math and Adrian for playing soccer with the Appleseed kids.
Thank you to Jen Lockwood and Noa Mor for their wonderful weekly art lessons. The kids loved creating with you! Thank you to Leslie Henderson for reading with kids and sharing the Ischool tablets; Val Harwood for training myself and staff in sharing books with kids; And finally, to all of the volunteers who have come from the U.S and England to work with kids and help the center run effectively. I have learned so much from you all. So, Ally and Emma Hoffman, Chrissy Ford, Deanna Seil, Michelle Zamora, Ale Gebauer Greve, Kieran Daly and Kitty Ottman, thank you so very much! May you all continue with the amazing work of influencing and helping people, wherever you may be.
I will be going to school next year and I was accepted by the University of Lusaka to pursue a four year degree program in Information System and Technology. But, I can not afford to pay for tuition fees for each semester continuously. I have managed to save some money for my first semester, about 6000 Kwacha, but do not know how I will manage to pay after that.
