Doug Lindsey Medical Expenses
Donation protected
I have created this page on behalf of my brother, Doug Lindsey, who was recently diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, a rare autoimmune disease that affects your nerves and spinal cord. Doug was laid off from his job in October 2015 and at this time was having feet, leg and abdomen numbness. He started seeing a chiropractor who said his neck, shoulders and pelvis were out of alignment. After trying this with no success, he waited until July of 2016 to see a doctor. X-rays were taken and showed he had multiple bulging discs in his back with 2 discs in the thoracic region touching his spinal cord. The neurologist was unsure at this point if he had a spinal cord compression, a cancerous lesion or multiple sclerosis so MRI's were ordered for the lumbar, thoracic and cervical regions, and also a brain MRI. These MRI's showed lesions in his brain and on his spinal cord. At this point he was diagnosed with the Transvere Myelitis. Because Transvere Myelitis can be a precursor to Multiple Sclerosis, he then had to undergo a spinal puncture to test for MS. Luckily, at this point, there is no MS, but they did discover that he also has West Nile Virus.
The Transverse Myelitis has multiple symptoms such as numbness in feet, legs, abdomen, sensory problems, spasms throughout his body and uncontrollable body movements, pain and burning in the neck and often a feeling of being crushed across the chest and abdomen. The medication they have put him on not only causes fatigue, but also a great deal of stuttering and loss of concentration. He now has to walk with a cane or walking stick.
For those of you who know Doug, you know his love of music and guitars. Due to the fact that he has not been able to work for over a year, he has sold all but one of his precious guitars to try to make ends meet. The first of August, the time came that he was no longer able to do this, and we had to move him out of his own apartment of 13 years and in to a bedroom in our basement. My husband and I are doing all we can to help with his expenses but are unable to pay for all his medical bills. At this point, he has not been able to get any assistance from the State and has applied for disability and will be waitng for that. He has had 2 MRI's, a spinal puncture and a trip to the Emergency Room in the last 2 months. He will be seeing a pain management doctor at the end of September. The medical bills are rapidly rolling in and he has no income whatsoever at this time. Thank you for taking the time to read this and know that even the smallest donation is a gift to Doug at this difficult time in his life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping Doug. Love, Nicolle
