The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Lao Tsu
My name is Alice and I am reaching out to strangers because my situation has become urgent and critical and I need to ask for help.
At 66 years of age I am experiencing financial hardship beyond my control after leaving a toxic relationship of 40 years. I have been homeless for the last 6 months and I am starting to lose hope of living a purposeful and productive life again.
For the last 30 years I am aware of the fact that 60% of working America are 1 to 3 Paychecks away from becoming homeless. But yet nobody ever imagines that it could happen to you. Until it does and it happens quite quickly and for most people it is irreversible.
To better understand homelessness I like to share my knowledge from my personal experience and also talking with people that are “chronically” homeless, people that live on the streets for years and even decades.
It goes in stages. After the shock wears off there is the stage of trying to cope with the reality of being disconnected and subjected to the criminalization of your existence.
I quickly learned about the ”cement jungle stealth camping" and so far I have been able to avoid any legal consequences such as a Fine of $300 for sleeping in a tent hence the stealth or cowboy camping. Using a shopping cart for your belongings is a Fine of $1,000. People have told me that there are Fines for covering yourself up with plastic while raining or simply having your belongings with you in public, inter alia.
Even with the best coping skills the constant stress of being vigilant of your surroundings at all times is excessive. At that stage depression and alcohol and substance misuse is usually the next step. Know that I am doing my best to stay mentally strong because I refuse to give up even when my IPhone was stolen and also my Electric Bike I listed on Craigslist and Facebook MarketPlace for the list price of $700.
And then there is the point in time where people lose all hope and the seemingly meaningless days fade into weeks and months and eventually years.
I am a Permanent Resident with legal status until the year 2030 but I do not qualify for Disability or Social Security which leaves me without any financial resources.
The weather is another factor. It has been as low as 19 degrees during one night and there is already snow on the higher elevation.
Given the fact that in Nevada I have no options available to be safely sheltered during the winter I must relocate to Los Angeles where I do have better options to rebuild my life. I am a Survivor and I know that I still have a lot to give. I have many vocational, transferable and practical skills that I can bring to the table.
My plan is to first volunteer for Homeless Outreach Organizations in Los Angeles while I am in temporary housing and work my way into gainful employment. The People's Concern, a non-profit Organization, has different temporary housing programs to help people transition into permanent housing and they are innovative and diligently working on long term solutions for Homelessness. I want to be part of the Solutions.
I am asking for $2,200 for the following reasons:
$ 502 Storage Dues in arrears Must be paid ON November 30, 2023 otherwise the Auction is scheduled for Dec. 13,2023
$ 600 approx. for U-haul
$ 300 approx. for Gas and Tolls
$ 800 for Initial Survival (Food, Public Transit, Miscellaneous basic needs for 3 to 4 months)
I have an expensive professional wardrobe that I can not afford to lose. The gourmet kitchen items and other not essential to life items will be sold once I get to Los Angeles. U-haul gives the costumer of one-way trips 1 month free rental of Storage unit.
Thank you for understanding and your generosity to help me RELOCATE.
