Friends,
Let me introduce you to Jay Kolka. Jay is your typical 17 year old. He attends Bay City Western High School and is a student in the Auto Mechanics class at the Bay-Arenac Career Center. Jay’s hobbies include playing sports, camping with his family, and riding dirt bikes. Last weekend while camping with his family in Standish, Jay and his younger brother Bailey went out to ride their dirt bikes nearby in the trails, which they have done since they were 5 years old. Their ride took a tragic turn. Even though Jay is an experienced rider, he had an unexpected accident, lost control of his bike, and was launched into a group of trees (alcohol was not a factor).
He was airlifted from Standish to Midland and then airlifted again to Beaumont hospital in Detroit. Jay suffered life-threatening injuries due to this tragic accident. He has 3 broken vertebrae in his neck, a broken pelvis, a broken wrist, 2 broken femurs, and a broken tibia and fibula in his right leg. Jay is a tough kid and has been a trooper throughout 8-10 hours of surgery, feeding tubes, blood work, and many other procedures. As a parent myself, I can’t imagine going through this with my child! Jay is the oldest of three children (Bailey, Alyssa). Jay’s parents, Doug and Traci are working class people that invest all their time and money into their family, and they need your help! They are what I like to call “good people”. Doug has been a volunteer football coach at the Bay Area Youth Football League for five years.
The burden of medical bills is currently mounting and will be substantial. Throughout this tragedy and pain, Jay and his family remain optimistic about his recovery. I am confident that Jay’s strong will and perseverance will be important in the months ahead.
Thank you for opening your heart and wallet to this family in their time of desperate need.
