Flour Girl: An NYU Thesis Film by Jada Bethea

A closeted lesbian finds herself in court-ordered anger management where she falls for another woman in the group.

About the Filmmaker

My name is Jada Bethea, and I've been an openly queer Black woman for four years. But every day before I came out, I turned on the TV and was surrounded by White men and women loving each other and being celebrated for their love and all I wanted was the freedom to live like them. But PDA, especially physical touch, in the LGBTQ+ community is surrounded by a lot of fear and shame.

Two years ago, on my girlfriend and I’s first date, we were verbally and physically attacked. Out of nowhere, a man walked up to our restaurant table and started cursing my girlfriend out, saying, “Take those f*cking clothes off. You’re not a man.” His rage escalated until he swiped our food off the table and struck me. My arm was sore for days after, but what hurt worse was that after that day, when we’d walk down the street, my girlfriend would let go of my hand.

As a Black lesbian, I know what it's like to live in a world that's not made for you and I want to show others like me that regardless, their life is still worth living.

About the Film

Attend the sessions. Get the paperwork signed. Jonah has no intention of baring her heart and spilling her secrets. So when presented with the opportunity to reveal her true sexuality and the traumatic events that landed her in mandated counseling, Jonah chooses to suffer in silence. That is until she finds a friend in Aaliyah and falls hard for her charms. But if Jonah wants to keep Aaliyah’s company and build a relationship beyond the platonic, she must decide what's more important: keeping her queer identity a secret or gaining the freedom to love and be loved.

Flour Girl is a love letter to Black lesbians. With tragedies saturating both queer and Black cinema, this short film is a reality where two dark-skinned women get their chance at a happy ending.

Flour Girl also stands in protest of the policing of Black emotions. In the early stages of concept development, I questioned if creating a portrayal of a Black person in anger management would do more harm than good, and that's when I realized I had to do it. Our anger is put under a microscope and demonized, so Black people censor themselves. This film does not.

So, Where’s the Money Going?

Total Budget: $9,200

  • In the film and TV industry, most often than not, people who are allowing their space to be used for production must be compensated.
  • The cast and crew work long, demanding days and must be provided meals daily.
  • Cargo vans have to be rented out for equipment transportation
  • Distribution: We want to share this story with the world, and submitting to festivals costs money

However much you can donate, your support would be immensely appreciated!
