I was adopted when I was six months old. At first, life seemed okay. I had a home and was enrolled in school. But as I got older things got worse. The house I lived in was infested with roaches and bedbugs. I smelled bad every day and was bullied constantly at school. Still, I was thankful I had somewhere to live. When I was 12, my adoptive mom tragically passed away from a brain aneurysm. Shortly after, my adoptive dad was shot and killed. I lost both of them in the same year. Shortly after, I was sent to live with my adoptive mom’s sister. From the beginning, I was treated like a burden. I was verbally and physically abused, and I wasn’t allowed to leave the house unless I was attending school. I felt trapped and completely alone. Earlier this year, just before I turned 18, I was kicked out. My second adoptive mom said she didn’t want to deal with me anymore. She pulled me out of school, away from my friends, and sent me to Job Corps two hours away. It was sudden and heartbreaking. After she dropped me off she blocked my contact and had all other household members do the same. I have tried to content her several times, but she has made it clear she isn’t willing to assist me in any way. Even though I felt alone when I got there, I focused on my painting trade and worked hard to rebuild my future. I earned my high school diploma in April and was on track to finish the program by February. Then I got devastating news. On May 29, I found out that funding for Job Corps had been cut by the Trump Administration. My center is closing, and I was told I have to leave by June 11. I have no family to turn to, no savings, and no place to go. No matter your political beliefs, this situation is real for me. I was just trying to build a better life. I am ashamed to ask for help like this, but I have no other choice. I am terrified of being homeless. I have worked so hard to survive and move forward, and I do not want to lose everything again. Please, if you can help in any way with housing, job leads, monetary support, or even just sharing this, I would be so grateful. Thank you for even taking the time to read my story. Orea.
